Of the 2,000+ stories I've written in my career, this one meant the most. Please read this column about my father: nyti.ms/1S0j36J

As someone who knows something about a newspaper closing its sports department, I am heartbroken for my colleagues at the Washington Post. They are so talented and produce such brilliant, meaningful work. But they also are good people. They didn’t deserve to be treated this way.

A staggering statement from former Washington Post editor Marty Baron: "This ranks among the darkest days in the history of one of the world's greatest news organizations."

No struggling newspaper ever saved itself by becoming a worse and less essential product. But what's happening today at the @washingtonpost is not just the latest devastating contraction of the news industry; it's the gutting of an American institution vital for a healthy society

Max Naumov just made the U.S. Olympic figure skating team for Milan 2026. Both of his parents died in a plane crash in DC nearly a year ago. They were his coaches and his biggest fans. He will be one of the biggest stories of the Winter Games.

In the 9/11 log of the dead kept by the New York Chief Medical Examiner's office, the very first entry is the Rev. Mychal Judge, case number DM-01-00001. The "DM" stands for Disaster Manhattan.
Josh Cradduck@JoshNBCTV

Remembering @StBonaventure's Mychal Judge, who died #Sept11 His last Homily: "Good days. Bad days. Up days. Down days. Sad days. Happy days. But never a boring day. You do what God has called you to do. You show up. You put one foot in front of another. You go out and do the job"

Former Boston College lacrosse player Welles Crowther sacrificed himself to save as many as 18 people on 9/11. His story needs to be told every single year. He was a real-life superhero.

These are text messages, exactly as they were written and sent, between a mother and her two daughters during yesterday’s shooting at Apalachee High School. The family shared the texts with The Washington Post. Both daughters were unharmed and now safe.

Huge news at The New York Times: After 63 years as the go-to rewrite man, lede-all maestro, and poetic obituary writer, the peerless Robert McFadden is retiring. Many times I have witnessed his artistry; the man is a legend. Great honor is due.

Banned from sports in Afghanistan by the Taliban, para-taekwondo athlete Zakia Khodadadi fled her homeland, joined the refugee team at the Paris Paralympics, and won a bronze medal. The women of Afghanistan are resilient.

Over three days during the Olympics, we shadowed the Olympic Museum’s so called heritage acquisitions staff as they got donations from athletes that told the stories of the Paris Games. From Carlos Alcaraz’s note on his jersey to Rebeca Andrade’s leotard. nytimes.com/2024/08/11/wor…

Thank you — merci bien — to the French security services, and all who supported, for a safe and secure @Paris2024. Amid a world torn by violence, these Games suffered no major incident. Praise where it’s due

The United States Olympic & Paralympic Committee is not going to let the IOC take Jordan Chiles’s bronze medal without a fight. It’s appealing the decision — but any court decision may take weeks, if not months, to resolve.

Shame on the IOC, the International Gymnastics Federation, the Court of Arbitration for Sport and every entity involved in this very poor decision that defies the meaning of Olympic spirit. The athletes should both get bronze.
Emily Giambalvo@EmilyGiam

Jordan Chiles must return the bronze medal she won on floor after gymnastics’ global governing body modified the results of the event final, moving the American out of medal position and Romanian Ana Barbosu into third. washingtonpost.com/sports/olympic…

I loved that Hayes walked onto the field with her black suit on in sizzling weather and hugged her players. She picked up Crystal Dunn and carried her for about 10 yards!

Welcome to the United States, Coach Emma Hayes! She just led the US women’s soccer team to the Olympic gold medal by beating Brazil. And only a year after the team’s crushing early loss in the Women’s World Cup.
