I want to watch the news like I watched Doctor Who when I was a child, from behind a cushion. I can't change any of it or stop any of it. The only thing I can do is retreat to where the blackbirds sing, where the morning dew sparkles in the lanes, and breathe it all in, live in this immediacy, here, now. 'In every walk with Nature one receives far more than he seeks.' - John Muir As we enter the sixty-fifth week of January, it's easy to stay hunkered down inside, to think that there's only grey and dark beyond the window. But if you adjust your field of view, there's still so much beauty and wonder out there, I promise. The winter trees show off their intricate lacework above your head, the skeletal shapes of old grasses and seed heads are sculptures to line your path, and the colours of last year's leaves are pale and subtle all around you. Your footsteps make barely a sound as you walk on the soft earth, and you always go home with your heart a bit lighter. 📍 Peak District, England © Peaklass, all real, no AI

Only 4 days to go until Christmas in my Top 10 Christmas Countdown, where I'm sharing one of my own favourite Peak District festive photos every day until the big day. Today is the day I've been counting down to since about September, the shortest day, the winter solstice. From today the sunrise inches earlier and earlier, the sunset later, and the light gradually returns. On this beautiful morning the sun rose with a glow that turned the land to pale gold, snow iced the quiet fields, and I could only stand and shake my head at how impossibly perfect it all was, no matter how very cold my toes were. © Peaklass

There's such a soft beauty about the light and muted colours of winter mornings, as if Nature is just easing gently into the day, slowly turning up the brightness. Of course I can never resist a gate, and this one was very temptingly open to take me into the ancient woodland beyond. #peakdistrict

You can't help but think that, were Howden Dam to be built today, the architecture would be much more functional and far less beautiful. Happily, those who designed it more than a century ago saw fit to make it soar out of the water like the turrets of a sunken castle or the towers of drowned churches. I hope they lived to see their hard work and vision reflected in the still water on a misty Autumn morning. #peakdistrict
