Based on the people I see on my own commute as I'm approaching the office I often wonder what mechanism was it that allowed someone from Somalia to arrive in London, be given social housing, be a drain on the taxpayer, and be able to walk three kids to school minutes from the river in zone 1? An unimaginably luxurious lifestyle for anyone in the private market. And it's mostly sold as this wonderful, natural aspect of London. But it's an entirely state-enabled situation which no one would ever have designed from scratch.

This is a good thread but both it and the replies go to show that even among right-leaning people the scale of the problem is vastly underestimated. There’s a huge information gap on many topics where people simply don’t realise how bad it is because it sounds absurd.

okay so i think the boomer conversational trait at the root of many problems is a total failure to even attempt to model whether the people around them care about what they’re saying. they tell the same old stories 100x and deep down they definitely know you’ve heard it, but it just feels so good to be talking that they go for it. in the absence of the thought process “would this person enjoy hearing this story?” the only factor that matters is how it feels for them to talk. same thing for the constant narration of everything that’s happening and the constant questions about tiny stuff and the random pieces of mundane information about ppl you don’t know. toddlers do the same thing before they develop complete theory of mind. idk if this is the consequence of some sort of old age cognitive regression or if boomers were just socialized really poorly.

@SaulStaniforth @rachelmillward Profit and loss are signals. On this planet resources are scare. Plants compete for sun, animals for food, etc. A loss signals that you wasted resources - you end up with less than the sum of the resources used. A profit signals efficient use of resources. Profits matter.

Recent reporting contains several inaccuracies around Natural England's role on Hinkley Point C. There has been no refusal, no ultimatum and no attempt to halt the project. Read how we're working with EDF to resolve outstanding issues: naturalengland.blog.gov.uk/2026/05/03/hin…

Everyone on earth takes a private vote by pressing a red or blue button. If more than 50% of people press the blue button, everyone survives. If less than 50% of people press the blue button, only people who pressed the red button survive. Which button would you press? BE HONEST.

- If all humans are rational, everyone picks red. - But we know many humans are not rational - Therefore, red means 100% survival, but greater chance non-rational humans die - Blue increases chance all humans live, including non-rational ones So it just comes down to if you think it’s good for non-rational humans to exist.

This is actually a test of basic empathy and intelligence. Most people in the world are too dumb or uninformed to understand probability or percentages. You are also including babies, toddlers, children and people with autism, learning disabilities, dementia and brain damage...

Obviously red would be the right button to push, except for the fact that children get to vote privately too. I’m not voting red if there’s a chance my toddler has randomly voted blue. I think that gets you a pretty large and solid vote for blue.

The stabbing of two Jewish men in Golders Green today is deeply shocking and a stark reminder of the very real danger antisemitism poses on our streets. My thoughts are with the victims, their loved ones, and the wider Jewish community. No one should be targeted because of their faith.
