When we're setting goals for a change/improvement project, the standard advice is to think "SMART" (specific, measurable, achievable, relevant, time-based). @artpetty says it's time to move on from SMART goals: we need goals that are 1) learning-orientated (we can only achieve our improvement goals through learning) and 2) impactful (for people who use our services, for our organisations and for our population): artpetty.com/2023/06/25/its…

And just like that, I’ve worked my last shift in NHS Scotland. There’s definitely been a huge amount of learning and developing new skills over these last years and I’ve worked with some of the strongest and most wonderful teams. But now it’s time for a new adventure!

In order to retain invested in talent we need to start the ‘we want to keep you’ conversations when the employee is still open to staying - not after they’ve already told you the are looking to leave. In order to retain we must build cultures worth staying for. #NHSRetention

Tonight, a mom joined the grieving parents FB group I belong to. Her son was killed 22 mass shootings ago. He was killed in a mass shooting last week.

So.. you wanted us to continue working full time hours while also having 20% taken from our wages because we didn’t get a choice to stay at home? (Risk aside)

Depression is real. Suicide is real. Always check in on the people around you, you have no idea what people are battling with.

13 years of austerity. Patients dying on the hospital floor. Staff suffering from PTSD, depression and anxiety. If the government cared about minimum safety levels in our hospitals, it would support striking workers in their demands for decent pay and a fully-funded NHS.

MPs did that. Nurses, paramedics, EMTs, teachers, firefighters and control staff have in the last 12 years faced pay freezes, attacks on their pensions, cuts to their services, broadening of their roles and faced dangers others hid from.

I said goodbye to a patient a few years ago. She didn’t die, she just got old. I treat patients to age 21 and they move on. When they do, I joke, “well, I did my job! I kept you alive until adulthood!” With this kid, it was not a joke. 1/

One thing I’m very thankful for in my place of work is the ability to participate in values based reflective practice. It’s always helpful to find different ways of approaching difficult situations. 💭
