A lot of the people who oppose Alberta independence do not actually want to argue the issue on its merits. Their first instinct is often not to persuade, but to shut the conversation down. They say things like, “just leave then,” or “you shouldn’t even be allowed to talk about this,” as though Alberta belongs only to people who agree with the current arrangement. But that is not how democracy works. In a free society, people are allowed to question political structures. They are allowed to advocate for change. They are allowed to peacefully organize, persuade their fellow citizens, and if support is strong enough, put the matter to a vote. That is not extremism. That is democracy. What I find revealing is that some people seem perfectly comfortable with democracy right up until the moment it might produce an answer they do not like. They say they believe in freedom, pluralism, and open debate, but when Albertans begin seriously discussing self determination, suddenly the tone changes. Suddenly we are told to go away. Suddenly we are told the subject itself is unacceptable. Why? Because democracy is only easy when you are confident you control the outcome. It becomes frightening when ordinary people start asking real questions, building real momentum, and demanding a real say. And that is the heart of it. If Alberta independence is such a terrible idea, then make the case against it. Debate it. Challenge it. Expose its weaknesses. Trust the people. But do not pretend that telling Albertans to shut up, get out, or lose the right to even hold a referendum is some kind of principled democratic position. It is not. It is insecurity dressed up as certainty. We Albertans have the right to discuss our political future and we have the right to settle that question democratically. You do not protect democracy by forbidding people from using it. You protect democracy by letting the people decide.

@guyfelicella Question Guy, how much has losing facilities like essondale contributed to more people being on the streets? Were smaller facilities able to fill this void?

Homelessness isn’t one problem. So stop pretending there’s one solution. Ask the real question: why? Mental health. Addiction. Poverty. Abuse. Different causes → different solutions. If someone is homeless because they can’t afford rent? ➡️ Housing + income + employment support works. If someone is homeless because of trauma, mental health, or addiction? ➡️ Housing alone is not enough. They need care, support, and services. This isn’t complicated. It’s just inconvenient to admit. Because solving homelessness means actually investing in people, not just moving them out of sight!

This week, we will be in Court on a challenge brought by several First Nations in relation to the independence petition. Our position is straightforward: the matter is non-justiciable, premature, and fundamentally political, not legal. It is not a matter for the Court and should be dismissed outright. It is unfortunate that emotion and misinformation have become part of this campaign, which has caused division and confusion. At this stage of the process, a private Albertan has collected signatures from fellow citizens and has already communicated that outcome to elected representatives. Did anything life-shattering or legally consequential occur? No. So we already know the answer to this week of court challenges: nothing changes legally, because nothing has happened beyond citizens communicating with each other and with their elected officials. This is civic engagement. It is a core feature of a functioning democracy and it should be encouraged, not discouraged and obstructed. Importantly, no one requires permission to speak with fellow citizens or to convey collective views to elected officials. Mr. Mitch Sylvestre chose to use the framework set out in the Citizen Initiative Act, legislation designed to structure and facilitate precisely this kind of participation, with oversight by Elections Alberta. Because that statutory framework exists, it opens the door to legal challenges directed at both the legislation and the actions of Elections Alberta. That is how we arrived here. But at its core, this case reflects something much broader: organized interests seeking to challenge administrative decisions that are intended to enable citizen participation, not restrict it. And when lawful civic engagement is met with attempts to control or suppress it, the result should not be surprising. The more participation is constrained, the more people will push back and seek other avenues to be heard. So we must ask ourselves: Do we want a system that encourages citizens to engage or one that discourages them from participating? And if participation is discouraged, who actually benefits?

Conservatives just can’t figure out that Pierre is the problem. They are pointing the finger at everyone else except the problem, @PierrePoilievre . Weak kneed cucks like Lorrie defend rather than hold Pierre accountable.

EDITORIAL: Turncoat Tories to hand Mark Carney a majority While the PM is likely to achieve a majority gov't with the outcome of three byelections next Monday, it would not have happened without 3 Conservative MPs crossing the floor to the Liberals. torontosun.com/opinion/editor…

Michael Ma crossed the floor from Canada's Conservatives to the Liberal Party. Weeks later he was sitting next to Mark Carney at a trade meeting in China. Sam Cooper highlights a number of scenarios where Liberal candidates who appear to be favored by China suddenly rocket out of obscurity to the top of government.
