The declaration calls for an immediate cessation of all executions in Iran, with the ultimate goal of abolishing the death penalty. The struggle continues in 17 prisons across the country. #NoDeathPenaltyTuesdays Ten political prisoners in Ghezelhesar Prison started weekly hunger strikes on Jan 30, 2024, protesting the mass executions. Now in its 31st week, this movement has spread to 17 other prisons in Iran. Since 2021, Iran has seen a sharp increase in executions, with marginalized groups disproportionately affected. It’s time to end this inhumane practice. #StopExecutions Every six hours, someone was executed in Iranian prisons during the first 20 days of August 2024. The international community must support Iran's growing abolition movement.

We gladly welcome the release of Professor @JavaidRehman 's final report on the atrocity crimes in Iran(crimes against humanity, genocide, and war crimes). This report, which addresses the crimes of the Islamic Republic during the years 1981-1982 and in1988, documents in detail the instances of crimes against humanity and genocide committed by the Islamic Republic against political opponents and religious minorities. The findings of this report were previously discussed at a meeting titled “Iran’ Decades of Impunity: From the 1980s to Jina Mahsa Amini,” initiated by the Justice for Iran as a the side event at the recent UN Human Rights Council session. ohchr.org/sites/default/…

Women human rights defenders, international lawyers, and UN bodies have called upon member states to recognise institutionalised and systematised gender-based oppression and domination as a crime under international law. Making amends for their historical negligence, it is now time for states to support the oppressed by endorsing the criminalisation of gender apartheid in the draft treaty on crimes against humanity. @EGACampaign @SLPJustice #EndGenderApartheid

Zahra (Ziba) Kazemi, an Iranian-Canadian photographer, was killed while Masoud Pezeshkian was the Minister of Health and Medical Education. Masoud Pezeshkian is responsible for preventing the truth about the real cause and circumstances of Zahra (Ziba) Kazemi's death from being revealed and for concealing her murder and torture. He and the officials under his supervision obstructed the discovery of the truth and the identification of the actual perpetrators by providing false reports about the real cause of Zahra (Ziba) Kazemi's death and played a role in preventing an independent and effective investigation. Testimony from Shahram Azam, an emergency room doctor at Baqiyatallah Hospital who examined Zahra Kazemi, indicated signs of torture, severe beatings, multiple fractures, and significant cranial injuries. The doctor also stated that Zahra Kazemi was sexually assaulted before her death. Masoud Pezeshkian has become a presidential candidate while he should be held accountable for human rights violations. Amnesty International has issued a long-awaited but timely and powerful statement, urging UN member states to recognise gender apartheid as a crime under international law. This could significantly encourage more states to support including gender-based systematic oppression and domination in the draft treaty on crimes against humanity. Thank you, @amnesty, and welcome to our shared struggle to #EndGenderApartheid. amnesty.org/en/latest/news…

Mohammad Bagher Ghalibaf has become a presidential candidate despite having a history of extensive human rights violations. As the commander of the IRGC Air Force, he was responsible for the suppression of protesting students at the University of Tehran dormitory in July 1999. Ghalibaf also played a significant role as the Chief Commander of Police and a member of the National Security Council in obtaining authorization for shooting and leading the forces that attacked the dormitory of the University of Tehran and student dormitory of Tarasht in 2003. During his tenure in this position, the Law Enforcement Force repeatedly summoned, detained, and tortured internet activists, bloggers, journalists, and filmmakers. As the Mayor of Tehran, Ghalibaf was involved in the suppression of protesters against the 2009 election results. He also, in his role as the Speaker of the Parliament, bears responsibility for approving the bill on hijab and chastity, which results in denying unveiled women access to public services and imposing severe punishments on them. AFP: "Shadi Sadr, founder of London-based NGO @Justice4Iran which seeks accountability for crimes committed in Iran, said that "regardless of the motivation" for Sweden's move "his release is a blatant, shameless act that has left countless victims and the wider Iranian society in shock." Noting that his jailing was the "first and only" universal jurisdiction case involving crimes in Iran, she said "it raises serious questions about political influence on universal jurisdiction cases". france24.com/en/live-news/2…

#HamidNouri, the Iranian national sentenced to life imprisonment by Swedish courts last year for war crimes and murder, has been released and is on his way back to Iran, according to Islamic Republic officials. This was the first and only #UniversalJurisdiction case concerning atrocity crimes in Iran. He was found guilty for his role in the massacre of thousands of political prisoners in 1988. The Swedish authorities made this decision as part of a prisoner exchange involving their nationals who held hostage by the Islamic Republic. Regardless of their motivation, his release is a blatant, shameless act that has left countless victims and the wider Iranian society in shock. This should also deeply concern the international human rights community, which has worked hard to #MakingJusticeWork, as it raises serious questions about political influence on universal jurisdiction cases and the effectiveness of justice mechanisms that involve millions in taxpayer money. Today is a very sad day for many many people... #حمید_نوری

In an unprecedented investigation, set to be presented as an addendum report to the @UN_HRC, the Special Rapporteur on the Situation of Human Rights in Iran will discuss the atrocity crimes of the 1980s, known as the 'Bloody Decade'. The Rapporteur's key speech will be followed by contributions from the victims' community and an expert in international criminal law.

Alireza Zakani, in his role as the head of the Basij Student Organization at Tehran universities, played a significant role in the suppression, assault, and detention of students at the University of Tehran dormitory on July 9, 1999. He also played a significant role as the Mayor of Tehran in violating women's rights by preventing the provision of municipal services to unveiled women, collaborating with the police in pressuring and arresting women for resisting compulsory hijab, and institutionalizing gender discrimination. The name of Mostafa Pourmohammadi is intertwined with the execution of thousands of political prisoners in the summer of 1988. He is responsible for the rape and execution of several female prisoners in Vakilabad Prison in Mashhad in 1982, the assassination of opponents of the Islamic Republic outside Iran, writers and intellectuals (Chain murders of Iran).
