A very common and costly mistake many retail investors on the Nigerian Exchange make goes something like this: They build a solid position in a strong, fundamentally sound company like Aradel Holdings. The business is performing well, earnings are growing, and the stock has delivered impressive returns. But after a big run-up, they decide to “take profits.” So far, that’s not necessarily wrong. The problem is what happens next. Instead of holding onto a core position in a proven winner or reinvesting in another high-quality company they move that money into cheaper, more speculative stocks like Omatek Ventures or Deap Capital Management & Trust. These stocks can look tempting. Their low prices create the illusion of bigger upside, and they often come with the hope of quick gains. But in reality, they usually don’t have the same level of earnings strength, business quality, or long-term growth potential. The outcome? Investors end up selling a strong performer too early, only to replace it with weaker, riskier bets that drag down their overall returns. At its core, this behavior goes against a key investing principle: let your winners keep working for you, and don’t be quick to trade them for uncertainty. It’s often driven by emotion the urge to lock in gains, the fear of missing out on “cheap” stocks, and the appeal of chasing fast money instead of building long-term wealth. Your biggest enemy in this market is - YOU!

I like this idea a lot, but corporate governance and ethics are the biggest concerns. Many Nigerians, unfortunately, have poor ethical standards. Some of the medium-sized businesses you want to support with capital may use the funds as “japa” money. Even the investment fund itself may be biased in its approval process, allocating capital only to friends or to those willing to offer kickbacks. It’s a great idea, but I wouldn’t feel confident investing in this type of fund because the potential for fraudulent activity is significant. Anyone who can solve the corporate governance issue would do very well with a fund like this.
Bremen@Rxbremen

Can we find a way to repatriate diaspora remittance into a big large investment funds. All our japa people that want to start businesses and are scared of family ruining their capital. They can pull it together into a very big investment fund manager by private equity, and it’s invested into various sectors and companies that have potential. It would be cheaper and easier access to capital and a lower risk, and they can pull out at IPO and recoup their money, some would fail, but majority would succeed. These investments funds would be listed on the NGX and compliance would be 100% compulsory. The UK has over 330 investment entities that target SME and is listed on the London stock exchange. We have millions of SME in Nigeria, and capital is the major issue for most, banks would not borrow them at good rates, or give them the patience to fail or they need to always have collateral. Muslims in diaspora can have their halal investment fund, just pull funds and list on the NGX and these funds would invested in businesses and idea in Nigeria.
