As someone who grew up in Cleveland, I know what homeownership meant to my grandparents when they came north from the segregated south seeking opportunity. As mayor, I’ve seen how housing challenges impact every part of our city. April marks second chance month -- a time to acknowlege the barriers faced by so many people who have paid their debt to society. In Cleveland we've tried to remove some of those barriers through fair hiring programs and marijuana expungement.

Today marks a historic step forward for our city. The City of Cleveland and the United States Department of Justice have jointly filed a motion to conclude the Consent Decree and transition to full local accountability for the Cleveland Division of Police.

Stephanie Tubbs Jones broke through glass ceilings in Ohio: becoming the state's first Black woman elected to Congress in 1998 & first Black woman county prosecutor in 1991. She's remembered for her personal warmth, sharp mind, & abiding commitment to hometown. RIP Congresswoman.
