It was different when we had “s” model years. Remember iPhone 3Gs where the “s” stood for speed or something weird? Basically there were off-cycle years where they just bumped the specs while they worked on the next real flagship. This also coincided with two-year carrier plans, which have essentially gone away. Now there’s no incentive not to push new hotness year over year, even if that hotness is incremental or inconsequential 🤷🏻‍♂️

Dear Tech Companies, I think it's time you consider a Bi-Annual release schedule. We really don't need new phones EVERY year and it's not enough time for you to properly innovate new products anyway. Think about it.
