"The ratification of ILO Conventions 189 and 190 is not merely a legal step; it is a statement of our commitment to transforming the labour market in Kenya. It reflects our vision of workplaces that are fair, inclusive, and resilient, where every worker, including those in the informal sector and domestic workers, is protected, valued, and treated with dignity. This is a milestone in advancing decent work, promoting gender equality, and ensuring safe and harassment-free environments for all." – State Department for Labour and Skills Development, PS Shadrack Mwadime, during the Nairobi public participation on the ratification of ILO Conventions 189 & 190. #Act4Care #ACTProjectKE #RatifyILO189 #RatifyILO190 #ChildcareWorkIsWork #DecentWork

Day 2 of our Leadership & Governance Capacity Building for the Domestic Professionals Association of Kenya (DPAK) COVAW, through the Action for Paid Childcare Sector Transformation Project (ACT) Project and with support from @GAC_Corporate, is strengthening partners like @DPAKenya to advance the dignity, professionalism, and recognition of domestic workers. Today’s session, facilitated by @CaroleAgengo1, focused on aligning power, purpose, and values as a pathway to transformative leadership. But beyond the frameworks, today was about doing the inner work of leadership. Through the 4Ps: Principles & values, Practices, Politics & purpose, and Power, participants reflected on how their personal and organizational values shape the way they lead, make decisions, and engage with others. At the heart of it all was a powerful reminder: "values must be intentionally nurtured. They are the foundation of empathy, compassion, and respect, and they ultimately define the kind of change we are able to create." #ACTProjectKE #COVAW #DPAK #ChildcareWorkIsWork #ChildcareWorkMatters #FeministLeadership #GAC

“We cannot end violence if we do not centre women with disabilities, who are structurally excluded,” says Gabrielle Henderson, Global Grant Portfolio Lead at @UNTrustFundEVAW, at the ongoing #CSW70 parallel event hosted by @covaw. Now streaming live on YouTube, the session highlights why centring the leadership of women with disabilities is critical to ending violence against women and girls in Africa. buff.ly/zrvoFOf

Today, we celebrate the women of Narok County, powerful voices, fearless protectors, and drivers of change. In Oloshapini, Ololulunga (Narok South), stakeholders from government and CSO networks joined members of the Ogiek, Maasai, and Kipsigis communities in a vibrant gathering that reaffirmed the vital role women are playing in leading the fight against SGBV, FGM, and all forms of violence. These women are not waiting to be saved, they are the safeguard for their families, their communities, and the future they are building. To every woman in that circle and beyond: your courage is seen. Your leadership is shaping safer communities. Keep going. #EndFGM #EndSGBV #NarokCounty #WomenLead #SaferCommunities

Last week in Kampala, @covaw joined regional partners for a Bi-Annual Regional Knowledge Sharing Workshop alongside @ICWEastAfrica, @ICWKenya, and Dignity and Wellbeing for Women Living with HIV in Tanzania, with support from the @UNTrustFundEVAW. The convening created space for regional learning and reflection on strengthening women-led movements and advancing the rights and wellbeing of women living with HIV. One thing stood out in our conversations: women are not a homogeneous group. Our interventions must embrace intersectionality, recognizing that women’s lived experiences are shaped by multiple, overlapping identities and realities. This also means ensuring the intentional and meaningful inclusion of women and girls with disabilities in our programmes, not as an afterthought or token gesture, but as a deliberate, structural, and sustained commitment. Because inclusive movements are stronger movements. #EndGBV #Intersectionality #DisabilityInclusion #WomenLed #RegionalSolidarity

To mark International Women's Day, @covaw joined @supamamas and other partners at the International Women’s Day Run, bringing together women and allies from all walks of life in a shared show of solidarity against gender-based violence. Guided by this year’s theme, “Give to Gain,” the event highlighted that real progress on gender equality requires deliberate contributions from governments, institutions, communities, and individuals. Participants ran to celebrate the resilience of survivors while championing collective action to end sexual and gender-based violence. Coalition on Violence Against Women continues to champion the rights of women and girls to live free from all forms of violence. As part of this commitment, we advocate for the prevention of sexual and gender-based violence and work to ensure survivors can access the support they need. This includes psychosocial support, free legal aid through a pool of pro bono advocates, and assistance through our toll-free helpline: 0800 720 553. Together, we move forward in solidarity to ensure every woman and girl can live free from violence. #IWD2026 #EndGBV #GiveToGain #WomensRights #EndSGBV

We are horrified and outraged by the defilement of a 9‑month‑old child in Busia. The arrest of the suspect must now be followed by swift, thorough investigations, prosecution in line with the Sexual Offences Act, and the imposition of the most stringent penalties available. The rising cases of defilement across the country are deeply alarming and must be treated as a national emergency. Children’s safety is non‑negotiable, and there must be zero tolerance for lenient sentences, plea bargains that undermine justice, or the weakening of charges to shield perpetrators. @covaw is closely following this case to ensure that the child and her mother receive the protection, care, and justice they deserve. We insist on strengthened child protection systems at all levels, vigilant reporting, zero tolerance for “settling” such cases at home, and full accountability for any duty‑bearers who fail to act. Our children deserve safety, dignity, and full justice. As part of our commitment to survivors of sexual and gender‑based violence, COVAW provides free psychosocial support and legal aid services. If you or someone you know needs assistance, please contact our toll‑free number: 0800 720 553. You are not alone!

Kenya has seen a rapid and alarming rise in Technology-Facilitated Gender-Based Violence (TFGBV), a form of violence that continues to evolve with increased digital access. Under the Making All Spaces Safe Programme, COVAW, supported by UNFPA, is working to strengthen prevention and response mechanisms that protect women and girls both online and offline. To this end, we recently engaged the Kisumu Court Users Committee in the development of Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs) and guidelines for integrating TFGBV into multisectoral case management , from recognition and response to referral and recovery. Stakeholders shared valuable insights, experiences, and recommendations that will shape inclusive, practical, and effective TFGBV SOPs and guidelines for the justice sector. Together, we are making all spaces safe. #MASS #MakingAllSpacesSafe #SafeDigitalSpaces #COVAW #UNFPA

Care work keeps families, communities, and economies running, yet it often goes unrecognized and unsupported, and undervalued. This past week, through the Action for Paid Childcare Sector Transformation (ACT) Project, COVAW convened Kisumu County’s Gender Sector Technical Working Group to disseminate the National Care Policy. Stakeholders present during the meeting not only committed to domesticating the policy but also identified priority areas for immediate action. By backing this process, Kisumu is taking a bold step toward valuing care work and ensuring that women in the sector have the support and resources they deserve. #ACTProject #ChildcareWorkIsWork #ACT4Care

In Isiolo, mental health remains a silent subject, often clouded by stigma and negative perceptions that discourage people from seeking care. During our recent Mental Health and Psychosocial Support (MHPSS) capacity building under the #KomeshaFGMSasa! Programme, frontline, and healthcare workers spoke openly about these challenges and the need to break the silence so that more people can access support without fear. These efforts are a step toward stronger support systems for frontline responders and better protection for girls, women, and survivors. #KomeshaFGMSasa #EndFGM #COVAW #UNFPA
