Daniel Munyanyi, a 50-year-old armed robber from Ndume Village in Ndanga, has been sentenced to 62 years in prison after being convicted on six counts of armed robbery by a Masvingo regional court. The sentence follows a ruling by Magistrate Innocent Bepura, who suspended 10 years of a 72-year term. Munyanyi will be 112 years old when he completes his sentence in 2088. The armed robberies took place over several months, with Munyanyi reportedly tying up Chief Nhema and stealing cash and valuables, among other targets. Munyanyi is also facing two counts of murder for allegedly shooting and killing two police detectives from Harare’s CID homicide unit last Sunday as they attempted to apprehend him at his rural home. He has been remanded in custody and is scheduled to appear in court again on March 20. Following the double murder, a manhunt was launched by the Zimbabwe Republic Police, with Munyanyi eventually being arrested by community members in Nyika, Bikita. Mr. Liberty Hove represented the state in the proceedings.
