@TCapoeti I have no problem with people using it about family and friends. But it is not the word to use in journalism, books, Wikipedias, etc.

A tiny, deeply gratifying thing I did for the first time the other day: in a Wikipedia reference to a recently deceased public figure, I changed “the passing of” to “the death of,” and it seems to have stuck.
