Critical E+R=O lesson: "Earn through your response what is denied by your circumstances." • Circumstances insert friction, barriers, and adversity between you and the outcomes you want. This is the way life is and always will be. • If you depend on favorable circumstances, you will lose. • When circumstances are not in your favor, your response must be better and more skilled--good enough to overcome the circumstances--or you will lose. • When you fail to earn the outcome you want, don't blame the circumstances. You had a chance to earn the outcome you wanted by responding better to those circumstances, but you didn’t. Figure out why and do better next time. • Meet every challenge, problem, or limitation in your circumstances--no matter how inconvenient or unfair--with discipline in your response.

Get your boys into football and watch the transformation! Football uniquely challenges boys in ways that boys need but rarely get in today’s society. We need football because it provides an environment where boys can become young men, and young men can become grown men.

“Years of training for seconds of action.” That’s the note and lesson I shared in my Daily Discipline newsletter last week. Games are won or lost in seconds of action. And it takes years of training to be great in those moments, the minutes and seconds of action that decide who wins and who loses. But you won’t have the skill or speed you need when those moments arrive unless you train those skills for those moments. You can’t avoid the years of training then wonder why you hesitate and stumble when the stakes are high. When you’ve put in the work, you stop asking, “What do I do?” You recognize. You decide. And you act. You’re not lucky. You don’t have a gift. You’re not privileged. You’re disciplined, skilled, and fast in the most critical moments because you trained yourself to be.

Skilled users of E+R=O understand: 1. Adversity touches everyone, all the time, in a wide range of ways. 2. The PRESENCE of adversity is universal and endless. 3. The RESPONSE to adversity is what's unique. 4. Strength exploits adversity for good. Weakness wastes it.

Your character is always one decision away. One courageous act and you're suddenly a courageous person. One dishonest act and you're suddenly a dishonest person. Seems like the kind of thing you should pay attention to.

Putting yourself at the top of your priority list isn’t selfish. It’s responsible. It’s easy to prioritize your responsibilities to everything besides yourself. • Job to do • Family to support • Team to lead • Tasks to complete • Deadlines to meet These require attention, time, and energy. But so do your needs, your skills, your development. There isn’t enough left over for you after you’ve taken care of everything but you. So, where are you putting yourself on your list of responsibilities and priorities? If you’re not high enough on your own priority list — or not on it at all — that’s an issue. Not an attention, time, or energy issue. It's an identity, discipline, and decision-making issue.
