Today I had the honour of officiating the launch of #TrueBeamRadiotherapySystem at @AKUHNairobi - a major milestone in advancing cancer treatment in Kenya and the region. This state-of-the-art technology enables highly precise, image-guided radiation therapy, significantly improving treatment outcomes while protecting healthy tissue. Cancer remains one of the most pressing health challenges globally and in Kenya. Each year our country records about 42,000 new cancer cases and nearly 27,000 deaths, underscoring the urgent need to strengthen access to diagnosis and treatment. Investments in advanced technologies such as the TrueBeam system are critical in expanding life-saving care for patients. Modern cancer care increasingly relies on advances in #science, #nuclear #technology, #medicalimaging, and #artificialintelligence. Advanced radiotherapy technologies are transforming cancer treatment. Through CT-guided planning, respiratory motion management, and surface-guided radiotherapy, we are able to deliver highly precise treatment while protecting healthy tissues. By synchronizing radiation delivery with a patient’s breathing cycle and using real-time 3D surface imaging, treatment accuracy improves significantly. These innovations ensure safer, more targeted care for patients battling cancers affecting the lungs, liver, pancreas, and other organs. Artificial Intelligence is also enhancing radiotherapy planning by supporting clinicians in contouring organs and improving treatment consistency. When combined with advanced modalities such as VMAT, SBRT, and stereotactic radiosurgery, patients can now receive faster, more effective treatments with fewer side effects. @IAEATC @IAEANA A great example is prostate cancer treatment, where therapy that once required eight weeks can now be completed in just five sessions. These advancements are a major step toward delivering world-class cancer care in the region - #Gamechanger. I commend @AKUHNairobi for its leadership in medical innovation, clinical excellence, and training of health professionals. Such partnerships between government, academia, healthcare providers and global technology partners are essential in positioning Kenya as a regional hub for advanced healthcare and medical research. #RashidKhalani The Government of 🇰🇪 remains committed to strengthening #science, #research and #innovation as key pillars for building a healthier, more resilient and more prosperous nation. @MOH_Kenya @MusaliaMudavadi @HonAdenDuale @fnoluga @NACOSTI @NRFKenya @KENIAUpdates @KEMRI_Kenya #CancerCare #HealthInnovation #ScienceForHealth #MedicalTechnology #Radiotherapy #Kenya #HealthcareInnovation #STRI #Science #Research #Technology #Innovation #CancerResearch #GlobalHealth #SHA

Two things have to change at once. Governments must become active de-riskers, not just regulators. And the wall between academia and industry must come down. Researchers have little incentive to commercialise. Industry would rather import technology. @KENIAupdates is breaking

Yesterday, 2nd March 2026, we convened a strategic meeting with ventures supported under the Technology Transfer as a Service (TTOaaS) project and the Kenya Development Corporation - @KDC_KE to explore structured partnerships aimed at accelerating their growth and sustainability. The engagement focused on strengthening the commercial readiness of research-based innovations. KDC committed to supporting the development of robust financial models and business plans for Afyalishe Wellness and Cracksfox, and to providing technical support in the design and implementation of a feasibility study for Ongataki Solutions Ltd. The discussions reinforced a critical takeaway: advancing research-driven innovation requires intentional collaboration. Forging strong partnerships with NEIL creates a pathway for coordinated technical and financial support, ensuring that promising innovations move beyond proof of concept toward scalable impact. We remain committed to building an ecosystem where research translates into viable enterprises and national development outcomes. Grateful to our coordinators from KDC; Faith Nene, the Director, Research, Policy and Innovation Mbatha Mbithi, Lead Research Policy and Innovation Judith Omachar, Business Development Robert Chesire, Ag. 🇰🇪 𝐊𝐞𝐧𝐲𝐚 𝐋𝐞𝐚𝐝𝐬 𝐀𝐟𝐫𝐢𝐜𝐚 𝐰𝐢𝐭𝐡 𝟓𝟎 𝐒𝐭𝐚𝐫𝐭𝐮𝐩 𝐅𝐮𝐧𝐝𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐃𝐞𝐚𝐥𝐬 — 𝐀 𝐆𝐫𝐞𝐚𝐭 𝐏𝐨𝐭𝐞𝐧𝐭𝐢𝐚𝐥 𝐟𝐨𝐫 𝐉𝐨𝐛𝐬 & 𝐖𝐞𝐚𝐥𝐭𝐡 𝐂𝐫𝐞𝐚𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧 Kenyan startups secured 50 funding deals in 2025, the highest on the continent, according to the Germany-Africa Investment Report (2015–2025) — ahead of Nigeria (34), Tanzania (24), South Africa (19) and Ghana (17). This performance cemented Nairobi’s role as East Africa’s innovation hub, contributing roughly $984 million (about KSh 147 billion) in total funding — nearly one-third of Africa’s startup capital in 2025. The report was launched in Nairobi on Friday 13th, titled “Germany-Africa Investment Report: A Decade of Capital Flows & Ecosystem Growth (2015–2025)”, and was released by the Africa Investment Bridge initiative, implemented by the Westerwelle Foundation in partnership with GIZ SPARK and commissioned by the German Federal Ministry for Economic Cooperation and Development, with co-financing from the European Union. 📈 Growth & Context • Kenya raised an estimated ~US$1.04 billion in total startup funding in 2025, up from lower levels in prior years, driven by large deals and sector diversification. • The ecosystem ranks among the top ~60 globally on the StartupBlink Global Startup Ecosystem Index, reflecting improving quality and scale of innovation. 🎯 What This Means • Jobs: Growing startups translate into high-growth employment opportunities — from engineers and product teams to sales, logistics and digital services. • Wealth creation: More funding builds equity value for founders and local investors and attracts foreign capital, strengthening Kenya’s financial ecosystem. • Global recognition: Consistent leadership in funding and ecosystem rankings strengthens Kenya’s brand as a tech and innovation destination. 📌 Areas to Accelerate • Scale-stage capital: More Series A/B funding is needed to help startups expand regionally and globally. • Beyond Nairobi: Support for hubs in other counties will spread opportunity and talent nationwide. • Deep tech & manufacturing: Focusing on hardware, AI infrastructure and climate tech can create more high-value jobs. • With continued focus on the Digital Superhighway and Creative Economy initiatives under the Bottom-Up Economic Transformation Agenda, alongside greater investment in R&D, universities, Konza Technopolis and the Kenya Advanced Institute of Science and Technology, Kenya is poised to accelerate its growth. Kenya isn’t just leading in deal counts — it’s building a sustainable innovation economy that can power jobs, wealth, and global competitiveness for years to come. 🇰🇪🚀 #KenyaInnovation #StartupEcosystem #JobsAndWealth #AfricaTech #DigitalEconomy @MoICTKenya , @konzatech , @KENIAupdates , @ictdigitalke

Data suggests that 42% of startups fail because they can't find customers, not because they can't find capital. If funding alone doesn't guarantee success, what else should innovation agencies be providing? Read our latest piece here: iaanetwork.org/article/beyond…
