On the other hand, with the partial exception of New Mexico, those intermountain states don't seem to lack for economic success. Most are growing, high income. Access to public recreation land if anything drives growth and demand.

An overlooked component of Texas’s economic success is the very low share of federally-owned land. When Texas joined the Union, it negotiated to retain control of its public lands. Much of that land was later sold to developers to retire state debt and endow public education. Combined with strong private property rights, development decisions outside of cities largely rest with private landowners rather than politicians or regulators. By contrast, many western states were carved out of federal territories, leaving Washington in control of vast acreage today. That difference still shapes outcomes, as building on private land is an order of magnitude easier than navigating the constraints that come with federal ownership.

@hot_town @Empty_America Mountains literally cut El Paso in half, which in English translates to, the pass. However if you want greenery you can get it in NM about 2 hours away in Ruidoso which feels like a Colorado ski town.

Far West Texas is sort of an arbitrage. You retain the unusual freedoms of TX without fully entering the Thunderdome of mass affluence, the frenzy of the Metroplex. Close access to NM public land and vibe, and to Old Mexico. An interesting node.

@Empty_America I've thought about how ideal El Paso is. Red state taxes and regulations, but you're next to a blue state where you have weed and gambling, then you have Mexico which is free from what the federal government destroys.
