Today, my book Infantry in Battle, 1733-1783, released. Why should you care? It changes the story of 18th century battles by telling the experiences of enlisted and NCOs, not just the officers. Battle looks different when you are enlisted. A thread for the infantrymen. 1/20

@SydneyFreedberg They haven’t left Germany yet in this entry. Around 15% of them stay, most make the decision to do so after hostilities have ended in 1782-1784.

@KKriegeBlog Is it true the Hessians were so impressed with American standards of living (eg nice beehives) that many deserted/mustered out to settle in America post war? “Ach, das IST nicer hier zan back home in der Prince-Bishopric of Assschmertz-und-Schrechlichkeit!”

All men and women, especially Christians, are called to fix their gaze on those who suffer, on the pain of the lonely, and on those who are emarginated for various reasons, for without them we cannot build a just society. Only together can we build communities of solidarity capable of caring for everyone, in which wellbeing and peace can flourish for the benefit of all. Caring for the humanity of others helps us to live our own lives to the full.

Over the next decade, this account will use primary sources to chart the movement of the Hessian (Subsidientruppen) forces which travelled to the United States to fight for the British Crown. These soldiers prepared to leave Germany (the Holy Roman Empire) in March, 1776.

If your navy is badly overstretched at 11 supercarriers, the question is not "how many more do we need?" it's "what the hell are we doing and how do we start calming things down?"

For sure, and while I appreciate the fact that Charlemagne provided 1/70,368,744,177,664 of my DNA (assuming roughly 46 generations between us) I am also really interested in learning about more average experiences.
payant@phillippepayant

@KKriegeBlog There's a difference between the average person alive during a given period and the ancestry of people alive today. For instance, almost everyone of European descent alive today is probably a direct descendant of Charlemagne.
