I’m signing out of the white guilt, white privilege narrative and ideology. We can accomplish more by being good humans and recognizing all individuals. It doesn’t mean we don’t recognize when others need a helping hand or a lift up. Nothing good will come out of shaming people regardless of their color.

Across the United States, millions of dogs, cats, and other animals are abandoned, abused, neglected, or euthanized each year. Shelters and rescue organizations are overwhelmed. Volunteers are traumatized by the endless cycle of preventable suffering. Yet these animals are not statistics—they are living beings capable of loyalty, love, and companionship. It is time for our country to elevate animal welfare to the national priority it deserves to be. We respectfully urge federal leadership to consider several common-sense reforms that would dramatically reduce suffering and improve the lives of animals across our nation: • Recognize animals as dependents for tax purposes when they are responsibly cared for. Families who provide food, medical care, and safe homes for animals shoulder real financial responsibilities. Recognizing this would encourage responsible ownership and adoption. • Establish federally supported low-cost spay and neuter clinics accessible to every community. Overpopulation is the root of the shelter crisis. No family should be unable to sterilize their pet because of cost or access. • Require spay and neuter for companion animals, with appropriate exemptions for responsible, regulated breeding programs. • End backyard breeding. Unregulated breeding fuels overcrowded shelters, genetic health problems, and animal neglect. Strong national standards and enforcement are needed. • Make animal abuse, neglect, and abandonment federal crimes. The intentional harm or dumping of animals should carry serious consequences nationwide. Cruelty toward animals is widely recognized as a warning sign for broader violence in society. Animals enrich our lives, support our mental health, protect our homes, and love us without condition. Yet too often, our laws fail to protect them. America can lead the world in humane treatment of animals. With thoughtful federal leadership, we can reduce suffering, support responsible pet ownership, and build a culture of compassion that reflects the very best of who we are as a nation.
