Meta’s Suspension of Tanzanian Activists Cannot Be Explained Away
I take this moment to strongly condemn Meta for suspending the accounts of Tanzanian activists at a time when every informed observer knows that media freedom in Tanzania has been completely suffocated and that digital platforms have become the only remaining space through which Tanzanians and the rest of the world can understand what has been unfolding.
Meta and its founder Mark Zuckerberg do not operate in a vacuum and they cannot expect anyone to accept any vague or convenient excuse offered to justify such bans at the very moment when truth telling is most needed.
The timing alone raises questions that cannot be dismissed and anyone who follows global politics can see how familiar this pattern is. Meta has a long history of working in ways that end up suppressing vulnerable voices whenever authoritarian governments are under pressure. No explanation can wash away the fundamental question of why such action is being taken now.
It is because of these activists that the world has been able to see the atrocities committed by the Tanzanian administration and it is through their persistence that major institutions such as the European Union have taken real action against the regime. Meta cannot pretend that it is detached from the consequences of its decisions. This is censorship in its purest form and it is happening at the expense of people who are already facing overwhelming danger and intimidation.
These activists are the same people whose reports pushed the United States Foreign Affairs Committee to call for an independent investigation into the killings in Tanzania. Meta cannot pretend that it does not understand the gravity of the situation. By removing these accounts, Meta undermines a crucial channel of evidence at a moment when accountability is being demanded globally.
Meta must therefore offer a serious and credible explanation for why accounts belonging to Tanzanian activists are being erased. Anything less would point to a company that has chosen to align itself with a government accused of mass violence rather than stand with victims who have risked everything to inform the world. If Meta has taken sides, then it should be honest about it instead of hiding behind excuses that no one can reasonably believe.
