In Kansas City, Kansas, Naomi Tolentino is transforming the fight against chronic absenteeism by focusing on individual student relationships. As the Coordinator of Student Support Programs, she leads the "Attend to Achieve" initiative, shifting from punitive measures to preventive strategies. School attendance teams go further for students with higher levels of absences. For students with “moderate” levels of absenteeism—those who’ve missed 10-19 percent of school days—attendance teams use strategies like “relationship mapping” to ensure they have a connection with at least one trusted adult.
