Cloves have a strong distinctive flavour that like cinnamon and nutmeg makes it an ever-popular spice. Madagascar is world's #2 producer, behind only Indonesia. Comoros, Kenya and Tanzania are big clove growers. Zanzibar was world's #1 and still today is called the Spice Island.

@haugejostein The idea is great, but can Africans spear head the renaissance. Main reason is to prevent the exploitation by foreign corps. African govts concedes a lot on taxes and labor safety. Agro-processing must lead the way by encouraging value-adds on produce.

We need to care about this because industrialisation translates into both economic sovereignty and economic development.

Happy 85th anniversary Nigerian Institute of Oil Palm Research: it's 3 Nigeria campuses are putting to good use research into West African crops, producing new varieties since 2020 like high-starch cassava to make better flour, insect-resistant cotton and higher vitamin maize.

Over 90% of Ghana's cashew nuts are shipped to India & Vietnam. Local farmers get about $600 a ton. Most exporters are Indian. Their markup is about 50%. If roasted, salted, packed & sold in supermarkets in Ghana, the price jumps to ~$20,000 to ~$40,000 a ton.

Agriculture presents a viable path to value addition and export diversification for Africa - but we have to be serious. We have to build an eco-system, like the Moroccans have done here - canals and irrigation, extension services, investment in high quality seeds and fertilizers

Between Casablanca and Marrakech, this is all one sees. Every inch of land optimized for agricultural productivity. It creates jobs, it provides resilient food security. This same route in many countries south of here is just unproductive, overgrown land with garden patches.
