It was only a matter of time before Scaloni opted to sacrifice one of the midfielders for Simeone. I completely understand the idea of surrounding Messi with the players he feels most comfortable with to maximize Argentina's attacking quality in the final third and attack centrally. But if you are not able to dominate and control games enough to consistently reach that phase of the game, eventually you have to adjust. Simeone can add a counter-attacking threat without compromising defensive balance. He can also give Argentina the flexibility to switch between a 4-4-2 and even a 5-3-2 if needed, without having to add an extra defender. Sacrificing De Paul also makes sense because, among Argentina's midfielders, he is the one who currently has the least influence on their attacking dynamics.

On paper that’s the way it has to be. Can’t see Rogers holding width. You’d like to use Reece in the first phase because of his technical ability and variation of progression. And you’d also like to see him come inside later in attacks because all those are more natural to him and as you suggest, because of his body too. I suspect they’ll lack natural width tonight on the right. Maybe Tuchel is going asymmetrical tonight.

Onus on Reece James to provide the width on the right with Rogers expected to invert. Tuchel has matched Argentina’s compactness with Rogers’ individualism/physicality. Can Reece do it? Will Rice/Anderson have to make outside runs? Or was it better to play a winger? Let’s see.
