Just want to do a shoutout for the PM Career led by @shreyas . Just took it this weekend and really opened my eyes to how to think about evolving your product career. And spending live time with Shreyas is golden. High insights / minute.

After 3.5 amazing years leading the team at Color, I’m headed off to a new professional adventure. I’m so so so proud of what we’ve accomplished and am leaving the crew in more than capable hands. I’ve been taking the last few weeks off to recharge, which means taking 15k steps a day and stomping all over San Francisco (and broader Northern California.) A few highlights: - Wandering the ferry building on a weekday - Family hike on Land’s End - Panhandle to OB run via JFK promenade - (and my fave: the bison!) - Lots of sunny Valencia walks - A dreamy visit to Napa (pool in Dec!) - Snowboarding for the 1st time in 20 years - Seeing the monster waves near Maverick’s On brand: I’ve also been keeping myself busy. So far, I’ve managed to: - Survive the holiday season - Completely makeover my home office - Reorganize every room in the house - Write approx a gagillion lines of code - Get a landline installed (kids!) - Add a mile to my runs - Put my entire wardrobe into an AI app - Nurse both kids through being super sick I’ve been very happy to spend my time off doing what I love: hanging with @elawless and the kids, building things with my hands, beep boop-ing code here and there, and living in the best place in the world 🌴🌁 As my mini-break comes to a close, I’m excited to enter this new phase with a lot of energy, some new good habits, and a very academic-cyber-goth office. 2024 is gonna be fun 😎✨

I’ve been taking the driverless robotaxis around SF. They’re safe and fun. Also slower and less efficient than Ubers, because they’re strict rule followers. What’s wild is that we’re back to a world human-taxis are expensive and hard to find. Suddenly it’s easier and cheaper to call a robotaxi! Last night I waited 30 minutes and two cancels from Uber before I called the Cruise and it came in 5. It’s fascinating to watch a labor shortage get solved by robots.

Thrilled to announce that the California Public Utilities Commission just approved @Cruise for fared operation 24/7 across all of San Francisco! It’s a huge milestone for the AV industry, but even more importantly a signal to the country that CA prioritizes progress over our tragic status quo. We share the CPUC’s commitment to delivering safer, cleaner and more accessible transportation options, and remain committed to collaborating closely with regulators to push toward this critical goal. Let’s Cruise!

Just heard some tourists absolutely gawk over a self-driving car, which is so common to see that my kids no longer blink an eye at them. Imagine if SF leaned into some of the things that make it so magical, instead of actively fighting the future?
Steph Smith@stephsmithio

When I first moved to SF, the self-driving cars I’d see often had drivers sitting in the front seat. Now, I never do. Seeing this technology blend into the city is one of my favorite parts of living here. Just a little hint of magic every time I leave the house.

Last year @Cruise AV's apparently drove 10x more driverless miles in California than any other company. We grew about 50x year over year. Lots of challenging bottlenecks are now out of the way, but I'm sure there are more ahead. Source: dmv.ca.gov/portal/news-an…

We promised we’d go driverless in 3 cities by the end of this year, and WE DID IT! @Cruise is now live in SF, Austin, and Phoenix. Folks, we are entering the golden years of AV expansion. More about this launch:

Speaking of AI breakthroughs, this is what scaling fully driverless cars—all powered by crazy cool ML—looks like. We now regularly deploy 100+ fully driverless @Cruise cars (no driver, just passengers) concurrently on the streets of San Francisco, scaling faster every day.

A driverless @Cruise AV (named Lemur) was dangerously cut off by another driver but managed to avoid a collision. Lemur went from 24mph to zero in ~10m with nearly instant reaction time. Based on the physics here, it's unlikely many of us could do the same.

Lost another friend, second in two months. She was fucking awesome. Someone who brought joy to everyone around her. Smart, creative, always learning. Absurd sense of humor, and a playful soul. Entirely dissonant with the way she left. She deserved much better.
