Thought-provoking and pradigm-shifting Renal Grand Rounds by Dr. Chirag Parikh @UVANeph today on the "Prognosis of AKI to CKD". A little AKI is not really bad, we need better determinants to categorize AKI and that could prevent several useful trials from failing.

@anna_burgner I think important to expose to them not only to inpatient consults, but outpatient clinic, PD, HD, etc. I think their views are skewed by only seeing inpatient nephrology #AskASN

I thinke we should do what IM did, separate hospital medicine and outpatient nephrologye. But that is not a topic for this group. #askASN

I do intern morning report and try to make it fun. We look at the electrolytes before we hear the whole history and move backwards. The we guess things right, it is a big oh and ah. They love the session, but I don't know if they are going to become nephrologists. #askASN

audience response helps me figure out if I need to spend any time on the topic or quickly move to the next. Very helpful. #askASN

I have one where the individual score average is about 65% and the group average goes up to over 90%. Then they work on some cases in groups and post their answers simultaneously. I stay quiet and enjoy the conversations. #askASN

10 questions are done individually, then in small groups (we do 6 - 9). then we do an application exercise. Questions have to be relatively tough to create discussions. #AskASN

For large classroom teaching, I am a huge fan of Team-Based Learning. It's magical! #askASN

@PHLane This is an important point in feedback of the program - learner at times overlooks this. Not all teaching has to be PowerPoint and in formal setting. #askasn

I would like to get rid of the concept of education as me imparting knowledge. When we discuss our patients they are learning, even if I'm not giving a mini lecture. Interaction and discussion lead to learning! #AskASN

Gain their trust, show you are there to help and make sure they learn and reach their goals. #askASN

@LTummalapalli Receiving feedback is very hard...and we often forget that as we start give it more and more (and receive it less and less). Not easy to receive feedback to that doesn't agree with your self-perception. We can teach learners to be better at this. #AskASN

Helpful for giving and receiving feedback: 1) emphasize growth mindset rather than fixed mindset 2) make feedback about the behavior, not the person #askASN

A4: I send an email in advance describing my expectations to get that out of the way. On the first of rotation day we introduce ourselves and have a friendly conversation for a few minutes. #AskASN

We do collective evaluation of both fellows and faculty as well. I specifically ask the fellows to provide comments and to only include comments that majority agreed with. #askASN

R2C2 is another way of putting it, Relationship, Reaction to feedback, Content of feedback and Coaching. #askASN
