@ScottishPower @SP_EnergyPeople Absolutely appalling service right now for my parents in Wales. Their electricity has been off ALL DAY and the phone line is on hold for half an hour then hangs up every time they try. Their next door neighbours too. No heating, no electricity.

@epilepsyaction volunteer Christina Evans shared her very emotive experiences of memory impairment and epilepsy. She said she lost her memories of her teenage years, university and meeting her partner. She added she knows she'll lose her memories of having her son too. #ILAE21ASM

#ILAE21ASM Dr Vivekananda discussed how cognitive processing (in their case a spatial memory test) can create an increase in interictal spikes in the brain. Dr Nagai presented on biofeedback, showing a potentially long-term seizure-reducing effect from this behavioural therapy

2/2 Prof Smith also raised an ethical point - in trials with DRE patients, placebo can increase risk of SUDEP eight-fold. These kinds of RCTs need rethinking. Prof Smith suggested comparing established ASMs with new ASMs, rather than placebo controls. #ILAE21ASM @ep_professional

1/2 Day two of #ILAE21AGM is underway with some very eye-opening talks this morning. Prof Phil Smith presented on the placebo effect - how this is rising in trials, affecting cost and the conclusions we can draw from them. @ep_professional @epilepsyaction

The keynote lecture from Prof Michael Sperling was a brilliant overview of the effectiveness, safety and practicalities of VNS, RNS and DBS. He observed that all 3 significantly reduced the occurrence of SUDEP in patients with refractory epilepsy - an important factor! #ILAE21ASM

A wealth of interesting presentations all day. Dr Sofia Eriksson's talk covered different sleep complaints people with epilepsy can have and how addressing these is one way to improve quality of life. This includes encouraging good sleep habits and reviewing ASMs #ILAE21ASM

Fantastic first day at the #ILAE21ASM Great insights on wearable technologies earlier in the day, with Prof Mark Richardson's views on some of the better devices we currently have for detecting GTCS and a notable absence of focal seizure detection devices! @ep_professional

Covid-19 has impacted us all. A recent study has shown people with epilepsy could have a slightly increased risk of being admitted to hospital or dying from coronavirus. This is why it’s so important that people with epilepsy consider taking the vaccine when invited to.
