Very similar pre civil war. Poor whites that fought were big time illiterate and big time Jesus freaks. Church and knowledge have always been at war with eachother. Same as it is today. Red/southern states education standards are near bottom of the list but they are some of the biggest "christians" in the country. They use it as an identity.
