This week we learnt, the true art of living is knowing when NOT to speak. Declining an interview is not arrogance,it is stewardship. In the age of perpetual microphones, and camera remember: some utterances cannot be unborn, unmade, or undone. A careless sentence today can become a life-sentence tomorrow.
One day, after being unemployed for quite some time, I had moved from place to place, sending emails, making phone calls, doing everything I could in search of work. Rent and other bills came calling every month, yet I was not earning. Whenever I turned to friends, they would simply remind me to find a job and stop begging for money.
One afternoon, as I was walking from town, I met my mother’s best friend along Kafumbe Mukasa Road. She asked if I had eaten. I said no. My lips were cracked from hunger and dehydration. She gave me a 500-shilling coin to buy some samosas across the street. But I knew if I ate them at noon, by the time I reached home, I would still arrive hungry and with no dinner waiting. So I decided instead to use the coin more carefully: back then, 500 shillings could buy a lindazi and a small 500ml sachet of water.
On the way home, my legs gave in, so I bought the Lindazi around Tank Hill Road. It came wrapped in half a newspaper, along with the water. I sat under a roadside tree shade and ate. The newspaper was greasy with cooking oil, but I read it anyway, and found an advert for a Pakistani car dealer, I think Yuasa in Nakawa. I had no airtime, but at least I could “beep” someone to call me back. So I did.
The phone rang back. A slow, deep voice answered: “Hello, you just called me, how may I help you?” I had punched in a wrong digit, and instead of the dealer, I had reached a private physician who also owned several resorts. “Hello, who is there?” he asked again. I stayed silent. Then he said, “In case you are coming to my practice, I will be there tomorrow at 3 PM.” And he hung up.
The following day, I walked to his practice, which was on the top floor of a building that housed some of his businesses. His assistant showed me to a chair, and I began reading a newspaper while waiting. I had no real reason for being there, no appointment, and I wasn’t even sick. His patients looked like a parade of wealthy, retired government officials, yet I stayed put.
When he finished with them, he found me still reading. He struck up a conversation about the stories in the paper, asked for my opinions, and we chatted. I must have intrigued him, because soon we were downstairs in the executive restaurant, still talking. He hadn’t even asked for my name yet, but our exchange of views carried on for 2 hours.
Eventually, he told me how he had struggled to find a competent manager for his businesses. That was my chance. I had just read a book on hiring and mishiring, so I contributed some fresh textbook insights on making sound human resource and administrative decisions. He listened, nodded in agreement, and seemed impressed. Then he finally asked what I did for a living. That was the moment everything turned: from that conversation, he offered me my first job with a good salary and privileges.
And on that day in 2011, I took this picture, to always remind me of unemployment.
