exactly this. I have an entire memorized line if I'm pulled over when I'm concealed carrying. "Officer, I'm a licensed concealed carry permit holder and I have firearm on my person. What would you like me to do?" (With hands on the wheel and lights on in the car). As long as I am not brandishing it, being armed when I am interacting with law enforcement is entirely legal.

Merely "approaching" law enforcement with a gun should not be a risky activity. If I am legally and peaceably carrying, should I be afraid to calmly interact with officers? Of course not. Obviously, that is very possibly not what happened in the event now making the news. Something caused a scuffle, and it's possible (but not yet proven) the man who was killed pulled a gun on officers. Belligerence and then armed aggression is very different than merely "approaching." But again, limited evidence right now.

One thing I'm not sure is sufficiently appreciated about this: keeping affordable housing costs very high helps a certain kind of politician manage their coalition. For the left: "look at how much $$$ I got for affordable housing!" For the NIMBYs: not much housing actually built.

@yhdistyminen I'm in one of the poorer city propers in the USA (Rochester, NY). I can assure that low income housing gets built in the poor neighborhoods all the time. But the few developments proposed in the nicer areas? They mysteriously seem to have trouble…

There's less of a nationwide rhetorical push to build low-income housing in poor neighborhoods, but that's largely because 1. that's already what federal incentives encourage 2. richer neighborhoods have an easier time blocking low-income development

I obviously disagree with Wanye but "YIMBYs are compromised by including too much anti-market nonsense" is an interesting rejoinder to "YIMBYs are just a lolbertarian psyop to maximize developer profits"

@mattyglesias They should pull the trigger and combine Buffalo and Rochester NY - combined, Westrrn NY is smaller in land area than Pittsburgh (and Albany NY too for that matter) and only slightly smaller in population.

I can remember when Grandpa Al Lewis did well enough as a Green to guarantee ballot access for Nader. At the same time, we have a LaRouche candidate for US Senator.

Monroe County is bluer than any NYC suburban county except Westchester (bluer than Queens) and Rochester is just as blue as NYC. NYS stays blue at the state level in large part thanks to Buffalo, Rochester and Syracuse.
