🇩🇪 Magdeburg cancels Christmas market over terrorist attack threat
The German city of Magdeburg has banned its Christmas market due to potential terrorist risks. The decision comes amid the trial of Taleb al-Abdulmohsen, a Saudi doctor who drove into a crowd at the same market in December 2024, killing six and injuring 338.
After the attack, authorities tightened security rules for public events. However, city officials now say they are being forced to take on anti-terror responsibilities beyond their mandate.
Magdeburg’s mayor, Simone Borris, wrote an open letter to the government:
"If holding a Christmas market is considered creating a potential terror target, then every city festival becomes a source of threat. Preventing terrorist acts is the responsibility of the state and the police, not municipalities."
