@KartsHuseonica You're only 50 Karts?! 😜 Hope you had a good time in the Northwest Passage, congratulations on your journey.

As I approach 40, the recent exploits of 68-year-old Mick Fowler and 74-year-old Victor Saunders give me hope that I might have 30-40 years of adventure travel left. These two are real heroes of healthy active ageing. Age is no longer an excuse!

I love my Royal Canadian Mounted Police. They closely monitored my Northwest Passage expedition. Photo from Inuvik, Northwest Territories, Canada.

@KartsHuseonica Sorry to hear the epic adventure had to be paused. Sounds like the experience of a lifetime, regardless.

19th of September, update from Leven
Brown:
‘Wow, well that was epic, we have all had a couple of days to ‘decompress’ after rowing what was essentially a sinking boat for 10 days. I can’t tell you how proud I am of this small team of 4 who took on the last half of the infamous Northwest Passage. When we put a 3 1/2 foot hole in the bottom of our boat ‘Hermione’ most folks would have automatically called the emergency service and helicoptered out with a good story to tell about the wreck. But not these guys, they consolidated, dug, moved rocks and we worked as a team to patch up as best we could our boat and re float her. The emergency engine failed next just a few short hours into the ‘recovery’ - again many would have called it quits there with a leaking boat constantly needing bailed 24/7 especially on an unsurveyed and exposed coast where there was scant shelter. 10 days of ordeal and some 200 -250 miles later we arrived in Paulatuk with our heavily damaged boat.
Did we do it alone? No, we didn’t. We had a huge amount of encouragement, help, supportive messages with a very, very special shout out to Gavin Ellis (who was supposed to be joining us for the last bit of the expedition into the Beaufort Sea - but ended up being pivotal in arranging everything in Paulatuk), Kenny Rubens, Connie Green who helped us in from Paul Steens Harbour (just amazing people), Shawn Marriot (who has been helping us for over a year now and has done countless things for us too) and thanks to you, our amazing followers and supporters who kept us going through these difficult days.
Rounding Cape Lyon we thought we were home and dry so to speak, then the winds violently picked up which caused an error on the helm which almost saw us pile up on the cliffs at Halcro Point - some say ocean rowing is not an adrenaline sport … I beg to differ 🤣 when you see cliffs looking out of the fog in the dark with a lee shore wind and you are almost spent with exhaustion … it is amazing the energy you get in these situations to row out of danger.
Like so many instances in life what almost kills you one minute becomes a source of strength and shelter the next - as the team and I popped round the back of the cliffs to shelter from the storm- I am sure there is a parable in there somewhere:-)
We assessed the damage to the boat in Paulatuk and it is too great to continue. Have we finished ? ….. for now at least.
Your support and help has been amazing. I can’t thank you enough for following us all and helping us unfold this tale.
Did we row the Northwest Passage - no, not quite. Can we live with that … well under the circumstances yes 🙂 We are the first to Row East to West, so far we have rowed the furthest East to West, fastest 1000 miles rowed on the Arctic, we have the oldest person to row in Arctic, the first female to row in the Arctic, first Barbadian to row in the Arctic, largest team, mixed team and a whole host of world firsts. We raised awareness for Big Blue ocean Clean up, Siobhan’s Trust - now handed over to a charity called ‘Hopefull’ (hopefull.org.uk) …. And I think, though I may be a little bias , best Gin, best Whisky (which will still be on sale and rebranded as a stand alone brand) - and best recovery from shipwreck in ocean rowing history!! 🤣🤩
