@adhd_dog @DisneyDLV Yeah for obvious reasons, but since I spend almost all my time in the Valley, it made sense to build it there. So it can be enjoyed. I only go to the DLCs for quests and resources.

2.3M views on a tweet calling Gen Z stupid, and almost nobody read the actual study. The Reverse Flynn Effect is real. IQ scores in the US, Norway, Denmark, the UK, and France have declined 2 to 4 points per generation since the 1990s. A Northwestern study of 394,378 Americans confirmed scores dropped across verbal reasoning, matrix reasoning, and computational ability from 2006 to 2018, regardless of age, education, or gender. But here’s what that same study found that nobody’s quoting: spatial reasoning scores went up. Three of four cognitive domains declined. One improved. If Gen Z were simply “less intelligent,” all four would drop together. What’s actually happening is cognitive specialization. A 2024 study of 1,267 people across two decades found the “positive manifold” of intelligence is weakening. People who scored well in one area used to score well in all areas. That correlation is breaking down. Brains aren’t getting worse. They’re getting lopsided. The Norwegian military conscription data tells the same story. Bratsberg and Rogeberg analyzed 730,000 men born between 1962 and 1991 and found IQ declining even within the same families. Brothers born later scored lower than brothers born earlier. Same parents. Same genes. Same household. The cause is environmental, not genetic. The environmental variable that changed most dramatically between Millennials and Gen Z? Screen exposure during brain development. The average 17 to 19 year old now spends 6 hours a day on mobile devices. For anyone born before 1995, that number at the same age was close to zero. A study in Nature found that the mere presence of a smartphone on a desk reduces attentional performance, even if the phone is face down and silent. This framing of “Gen Z is less intelligent” is exactly backwards. Gen Z has been neurologically optimized for a specific cognitive environment: rapid task switching, visual-spatial processing, and short-burst information extraction. Their brains adapted to what we built for them. The IQ test just wasn’t updated to measure the new configuration. The question worth asking is whether the skills IQ tests measure still predict the outcomes we care about, or whether we’re using a 20th century ruler on a 21st century brain.
