@Dr_Perreault I would LOVE to be added to that list! I really want to explore feeding practices in indigenous populations, especially in the north. Among about a million other things!

@KateShoveller There is poor Indigenous representation in STEM, so it's really tough. I would submit USRA+ projects (no limit). We also have the Indigenous STEM Mentorship program at UG, I can add your name if you want, we have no one from Animal Bio.

People still accept unpaid volunteers? Aside from the obvious as to why this is a bad idea. Also, think about all those that have to work to live and have no time to volunteer. You're giving a leg up to those that likely already have privilege.

@Dr_Perreault Can you say more about being Indigenous focused? I would love to understand how to improve access and encourage application.

@KateShoveller For me, no volunteers. 4th yr project students are great. USRA+ (Blk/Ind) for summer, no # caps, and it helps those who are often less privileged. My advocacy is predominantly Indigenous focused. Someone else can take this battle on with the institutions, I do plenty already.

@Dr_Perreault I would maybe start a discussion with the institutions that see volunteerism as a bonus, such as the professional schools, to change their entrance criteria. Getting good grades to get into these programs is also a priviledge.

@Dr_Perreault @Dr_Perreault I understand your point, but I think it is more nuanced. I have paid positions, but there is no way that I could accommodate all the requests and pay everyone. And to be clear, most are looking into veterinary school and that is why they want to volunteer.

@ThePhDPlace You do not have to beat around the bush, remember that in everything in life, if you do not take care of yourself, no one else will. Be honest and do what is in your best interest. If the response is poor, move on, you will be better for it.
