A massive new study shows updated COVID-19 vaccines slash the risk of heart attacks, strokes, and deaths. A groundbreaking study published in JAMA Internal Medicine shows that updated COVID-19 vaccines offer powerful protection for the heart, reducing the risk of severe cardiovascular events like heart attacks, strokes, and heart failure by almost 40%. Analyzing data from more than 1 million U.S. veterans, researchers discovered that vaccination not only mitigates virus-specific heart damage but also leads to a 6% drop in overall severe cardiovascular disease and a 7% reduction in all-cause hospitalizations and deaths. For every 10,000 people vaccinated, the shot was linked to preventing roughly 23 major cardiovascular events, 30 hospitalizations, and 16 deaths over just an eight-month period. The cardiovascular benefits were most pronounced in adults over age 75 and individuals living with chronic conditions like diabetes, lung disease, or pre-existing heart issues. Doctors emphasize that COVID-19 is far more than a respiratory illness; the virus causes systemic inflammation, blood vessel damage, and clotting, all of which strain the heart. Crucially, vaccinated individuals also saw fewer health complications that were not directly linked to a diagnosed COVID-19 case, suggesting the vaccine may ward off damage from mild or undetected infections. These findings underscore that keeping up with vaccinations is a vital tool for long-term cardiovascular health. source: Cai, M., Xie, Y., & Al-Aly, Z. The U.S. government just handed sacred Apache land to a copper mine. When they're done, the ancient oaks where generations have prayed and come of age will be gone - replaced by a crater two miles wide. Chi'chil Biłdagoteel, known as Oak Flat, sits in Arizona's Tonto National Forest outside Superior. Its 2,422 acres of old-growth oaks, springs, and sacred sites have held San Carlos Apache prayers and coming-of-age ceremonies since time immemorial. The endangered Arizona hedgehog cactus grows here. An endangered ocelot was struck and killed on a nearby highway - a reminder of what else calls this place home. President Eisenhower protected this land from mining in 1955. That lasted 60 years, until the late Sen. John McCain slipped a last-minute provision into a must-pass defense bill in 2014, authorizing the transfer of Oak Flat to Resolution Copper. Below Oak Flat, the Sonoran Desert rises to meet you in thousands of saguaro cacti lining the drive up from Phoenix. Environmentalists warn that block-cave mining at this scale threatens the fragile water systems that sustain this entire ecosystem. Apache Stronghold fought it in court for over a decade. They took it all the way to the Supreme Court. The Court declined to hear it - no explanation, no ruling on the merits, just a closed door. Even Justice Neil Gorsuch, one of the Court's most conservative voices, wrote a dissent calling it a grievous mistake. This past March, the transfer was finalized anyway. The crater the mine leaves behind will be two miles wide and 1,100 feet deep. Permanent. The American people will receive zero in royalties. That's not an oversight - it's the 1872 Mining Law, a statute signed by Ulysses S. Grant that lets mining companies extract minerals from public land and pay nothing. It hasn't been updated in over 150 years. 150 years — can you believe it? Twenty-one of Arizona's 22 federally recognized tribes oppose this. Seventy-one percent of Americans support protecting Oak Flat. "We will never stop fighting," said Wendsler Nosie Sr. of Apache Stronghold. "This is a struggle for the soul of our people." What kind of country lets a 150-year-old law give away sacred land and call it legal? #DemsUnited

Almost a year after Trump’s domestic policy bill passed, at least 770,000 children are no longer receiving SNAP benefits. In Arizona, the number of children receiving SNAP has dropped by more than 200,000 since July 2025 — a 55% decline. propublica.org/article/snap-b…

Give A Shit About Nature
Give A Shit About Nature@giveashitnature·
In 1980, an entire species had one mother. Her name was Old Blue. The Chatham Island black robin had been reduced to just 5 individuals, and Old Blue, identified by the blue band on her leg, was the only breeding female left alive. Introduced rats and cats had wiped the species from most of its range on the remote Chatham Islands, 500 miles east of New Zealand, and habitat loss had finished much of the damage. By the time Don Merton and his New Zealand Wildlife Service team began intensive management, there was almost nothing left to save. Merton realized that if Old Blue's eggs were removed and placed in the nests of Chatham Island tomtits, she would lay replacement clutches. The foster parents raised the first broods while Old Blue produced more eggs. Against all odds, the population began to grow. Old Blue was last seen in December 1983. By then, she had produced enough descendants to give the species a future. Every Chatham Island black robin alive today traces its ancestry back to her. Don Merton went on to apply similar techniques to endangered birds around the world before his death in 2011. The black robin remains one of conservation's most extraordinary success stories. Old Blue never knew how close her species came to disappearing forever. But she lived long enough to ensure that it didn't.

It is important to resist the commodification of basic human needs. Food, water and healthcare cannot be subordinated to market considerations or geopolitical interests. Access to adequate food is a fundamental human right grounded in the dignity of every person. Meeting this need not only alleviates suffering but also addresses underlying causes of geopolitical instability. Indeed, food security is an essential component of global and integral security. vatican.va/content/leo-xi…

Michigan is moving a bill that would penalize bystanders who come within 25 feet of a first responder on duty. We must ask ourselves why. Some of the most important moments of accountability in this country came from someone who had the courage to stand there and record. Twenty five feet in the dark, in a crowd, or in the chaos of the moment is not close enough to capture the truth. Transparency matters.

ICE hit & run over Black woman with car—just peacefully waving American flag. "She didn't know there was a vehicle behind her, and was not out to block traffic," said witness. "He didn't warn her, didn't honk, and didn't slow down." "If you strike a pedestrian—that is a crime under any situation under New Jersey law." This is the 2nd or 3rd time that same red Challenger has tried to run somebody over—according to witness. Man driving is a contract worker at the Delaney ICE for profit prison run by GEO Group in Newark, New Jersey.
