Lobster season is wrapped! I’m so grateful for this experience. I always had great respect for husband, yet after working by his side as first mate, that respect is off the charts! My other office isn’t the open ocean, yet it’s beautiful!

A lot of tears have been shed this week. Our precious Toto went to heaven. We got to love him for nearly 16 years. The love Toto gave us is immeasurable. This little dog had so many amazing adventures! He was funny and a rascal, consistently protective, loyal and loving. We miss him.

 Dad always said, “Kathy, always give 110%. If the customer expects the paper on the driveway, get it on the front porch.” Oh my goodness! I just found my newspaper sacks from 50 years ago! So many memories! 101 customers, 7 days a week, plus door to door monthly collections for 3 1/2 years! Priceless childhood lessons, especially in customer relations and service!

@kathyireland I was a a paper girl. I delivered the Arizona Republic and the Phoenix Gazette. Sometimes I could barely keep my bike upright with the Sunday paper and inserts. I still thank God for keeping me safe during those years. Grateful

@kathyireland I delivered the WaPo back in the 80's. I'd hook my customers up with the Coupon/Sales section they'd deliver on Thursdays for the Sunday insert. People loved it. I'd also put papers inside their storm doors in rain or snow days. I'd make $300-500 in tips on a 135 house route.

It’s funny , myself and everyone else I know that had a paper route became successful. It is really a disservice to today’s youth to not have jobs like this available. Logistics, Customer Service, Accounts Receivable, Transportation, Accounts Payable, and Delivery, all wrapped up in one.

@kathyireland I love it! You still have the carrier sack! I still have the ribbons from News Press carrier of the month. In 1980, I had the largest route ever in SBNP history. It was later split by the b/c it was too large.

Thanks for sharing Kathy, it’s foundational to have a job(s) as a kids. I had a newsstand (plus other jobs) for Sunday papers only, every Sunday 6:30 AM to 1:30PM age 8-22. Saved enough money for almost two years of tuition at private college ( stayed at home and commute). Loved running my own business and taking care of my customers, many of whom taught me about the world with great conversations about life, religion, business, real estate, media, everything. Loved it. It was hard considering the commitment, the hours and the weather 52 weeks a year in a Chicago suburb. Also, Kathy’s one of my favorite SI models from teen age years. Glad to see that you are thriving and doing interesting things still.
