When I first relocated, one of my flatmates was a plumber with a 2-year training course. Yes, professional plumber. He had a clear career pathway. No superiority. No ego. No “I’m better than you.” At 22 years of age, he already owned a house in England and drove a 2016 Mercedes Benz coupe. Here I was, a 29 year old with just a Physiotherapy degree with $0 in my account. His salary and mine? Barely a 5% difference when I got my first pay. Then I started meeting people from everywhere, White collar, blue collar, no collar etc 😁 A lady managing over $400m portfolio took me golfing like it was a stroll in the park. A physics professor who has seen half the world once visited me just to eat Nigerian Jollof rice. Nobody cared about titles. Nobody was trying to oppress anybody. We address ourselves by first name and respect everyone. Meanwhile in Nigeria, some people will act like their profession is the gateway to heaven. Some with the little torokobo in their hand will oppress others for not having, some will mock others for earning more peanuts than others, some will try and hinder you from getting better pay. The hierarchy mindset is so toxic that we can’t even see how it’s holding the entire country hostage. We worship titles, and unnecessary things, maybe that's why politicians will keep seeing us as fools. Sometimes I wonder if we will ever reach a point where skill, value, and humanity matter more than titles. I don’t look down on anyone, I just want a society where everyone is respected and rewarded for REAL work, not imaginary status. So if you come around me and try to prove one yeye superiority, I will put you in your place. Stay humble and learn to respect others.
