With the terrible news about the crew members lost in the recent KC-135 crash, I thought it was important to point out this aspect of being an enlisted flight crew member, specifically a Boom Operator. As an Inflight Refueling Specialist (AFSC 1A0X1), one of the things I found fascinating is that being an enlisted flight crew member was 100% completely voluntary. A little side note about the AFSC: The “1A” stands for aircrew, and the next digit “0” puts Inflight Refueling Specialists at the top of the list for enlisted aircrew (Pilots are 11X, but that’s in the officer ranks). (Note for my Flight Engineer friends (AFSC 1A1X1)… FE is actually an older and tougher job, but FEs don’t handle flight controls. Still… respect! ) When I enlisted the first time, I told myself I wouldn’t volunteer for anything. I guess I’d seen too many episodes of M*A*S*H. Yet at the end of Basic Training, when they were looking for Boom Operators, it only took me about two seconds to raise my hand anyway. You had to choose to do it. They couldn’t order you. And you don’t choose in the dark either. Early in the training pipeline, instructors go out of their way to explain the risks, the dangers, and the headaches (along with the perks as well). At any point you wanted, you could just say, “I don’t want to fly anymore.” That’s not to say the Air Force wouldn’t put you in a job that was less than ideal (needs of the Air Force and they won’t spend any more money on training you, so it’s OJT jobs only — cook, security police, etc.), but nobody was ever forced to be a flight crew member. So if you’ve ever wondered why we Boom Operators seem so proud of our jobs and our aircraft, now you know. We chose to do this job. And we've earned the right. Photo from DVIDS: Col. Andrew P. Registration and VIN checks were inconsistent and the steering column showed damage, suggesting the car may have been stolen. Additional deputies and a Palomar College police officer responded. The 33-year-old male passenger ignored repeated commands, rolled up his window, reached to the floorboard and armed himself with a semiautomatic handgun. Deputies safely removed the 21-year-old female driver from the vehicle. The passenger refused orders to drop the weapon and raised the gun. Five deputies and the officer opened fire, fatally striking him.

I think it was neither. We're not flying transport planes over Iran required for the MOAP and the MOP explodes below ground so there should not be that big of a fireball. I think the video shows the secondary explosion of a missile facility hit with a smaller weapon such as a JDAM.
