Our strand had the opportunity to explore Flipgrid and to connect with each other through watching short 1 minute videos where we chose “this or that” and explained why. It was a fun activity designed to explore a great tool! #edtech207

Q1: If we truly value critical thinking, creative problem solving, communication, and collaboration, we should be teaching and assessing those outcomes. How are you creating opportunities to develop these skills in students? #formativeChat #LEAPeffect

@ElisaBostwick I think allowing the students the chance to take ownership in their learning allows it to be more meaningful. They know the "why" behind the learning and they are focused and showcasing their understanding #formativechat

@DrMayeaux This is a great idea! Having students communicate their thinking allows them to talk through the steps and display their own understanding. When they can confidently teach a topic they know they've got it! #formativechat

A2: For mathematics, I love to have small groups show the multiple ways they may have solved complex problems on large chart paper. Then, students move from paper to paper asking, "I notice...I wonder..." The discussions are amazing! #formativechat

@goformative A2: Kahoot or small exit tickets to assess student learning. It's a fun way for students to take ownership over their learning while not applying the pressure that a pop quiz might hold. An exit ticket is short and to the point and a great way to plan next steps #formativechat

@MrAustinA2 @MarianaGSerrato Exactly! I usually don't even answer questions with a yes or no, I try to remain neutral so students need to support their own thinking and validate their work themselves. It's not about seeking our approval, but rather making sure they are confident in themselves #formativechat

@MarianaGSerrato Spot on! I think it's really important to set up a classroom culture where a central value is making meaning collaboratively through inquiry + asking questions rather than through competition to be "right" or "best," which is often a default method. #FormativeChat

@ElisaBostwick @RavesiWeinstein Absolutely. Allowing the students to have their personal inquiry is a great way to open opportunities for them to truly collaborate and use critical thinking around a topic that they are personally curious about. #formativechat

@RavesiWeinstein It's so powerful when students come up with their own questions and variables to test. Our students develop their own plans in STEM and it's really amazing to hear them create the process and then refine when it needs to be. #formativechat #LEAPeffect

A1: As a science teacher, the best way to do this is through inquiry-based labs. Students come up with their own questions and variables to test; it assesses all of these areas. #FormativeChat

@mssackstein This is a great point! Opening up the conversation is a great first step and students are often very honest about what they need. #ecet2

@ECET2natl I think really pushing to take the steps toward building relationships with others can help to make equity a reality. Creating opportunities for others to voice concerns and ideas is a great way to get the conversation started and move in the right direction #ecet2

@ECET2natl We work a lot as a team during staff meetings to help open lines for communication, especially around student equity. Working with specialists in our school is also a great way to make sure students have what they need. #ecet2
