A True-Life Story from Lagos That Still Breaks My Heart Every Time I Remember Let me share something deeply personal that happened to me a few years ago in Lagos. This is not fiction it is my real experience as Josh from Surulere. I rarely speak about it, but today I feel the need to open up and hear your thoughts. In 2023, my father lost his job suddenly after more than 20 years of loyal service. We lived in a modest duplex in Bariga that came with his position. When the job ended, the house went too. We had to pack everything and move into a cramped two-bedroom flat in Agege, Life became very tight very quickly. Growing up, my father had always been the generous one in the family. Over the years, he brought relatives from the village uncles, cousins, even distant in-laws to Lagos. He housed them, fed them, helped them find small jobs or start petty trade. Our home was always full because of his open heart. When we lost the house and the income, those same people slowly drifted away. One by one, they found their own paths, built their own lives in different parts of the city, and stopped checking in. Calls became fewer. Visits stopped entirely, My father never complained, but I saw the quiet pain in his eyes. Then came the hardest blow. My father suffered a massive stroke The medical bills piled up, Hospital stays, medications, physiotherapy everything drained what little savings we had left. I was still in school then, working odd jobs after classes to help. My mother cried every night, praying for strength. The people my father had lifted up when they had nothing, None of them came forward, Not one offered even a small contribution toward his treatment, Some blocked our numbers when my mother reached out,Others sent excuses. My father, lying in that hospital bed, never once mentioned their names. He only asked about us his wife and children. He fought bravely for months, but the stroke eventually took him. We buried him quietly in the village. To this day, I carry the weight of that silence from those he helped. Yet my father never regretted his kindness. In his final days, he told me, “Son, do good anyway. Not everyone will remember, but God does.” Now I turn to you with the question that still haunts me. Be honest, no holding back: If you were in my father’s position or if you are someone who has opened your doors wide to family and friends what would you do differently knowing many might walk away when life turns hard?
