The government just continues to burn through your cash at a record clip and sticks you with the bill for its regulatory harassment. In this case, the Biden-Harris Admin’s $42 billion plan to expand Internet access has fallen so far behind schedule (it has connected exactly zero people after 1️⃣,1️⃣0️⃣4️⃣ days) that the government is just throwing even more money at the problem, instead of fixing it. Case in point: New Mexico officials are now requesting $70 million in new state funds to pay for vouchers that 95,000 unserved or underserved homes and business could use to buy Starlink (and presumably, depending on when it launches, Kuiper) satellite kits. Now, standing alone, this voucher idea can make a lot of sense. It could quickly and efficiently connect rural locations, allowing us to spend pennies, if any, on the dollar. The government should explore it. *But* here’s the rub. New Mexico is only doing this because the federal $42B program is so far behind schedule. New Mexico’s plan is to spend this state money to connect households now and then, when the federal program finally gets moving, use New Mexico’s share of the federal $42B to *overbuild* all or some of those exact same locations with costly fiber. 🤯 That’s like the government paying for you to have a driveway and then coming back a couple of years later and paying to build you a second driveway parallel to your existing one. But wait, there’s more! New Mexico’s decision further exposes the Biden Admin’s costly bias against Musk’s Starlink—a form of regulatory harassment that you’re now paying for. The federal government continues to claim that Starlink is not a Reliable Broadband Service and thus is ineligible for full participation in the $42B program. So the federal government is going to spend more of your money than necessary and take longer than needed to connect households using non-satellite technologies. But, because the $42B is a complete mess and leaving Americans stuck on the wrong side of the digital divide, New Mexico is turning to Starlink as the high-speed Internet service that can get the job done today. In other words, New Mexico shows that, contrary to the federal government’s claim, Starlink is a reliable broadband service and the Biden Admin’s contrary claim is not grounded in the facts or sound policy. It is @DOGE time.
