A Morning at the Supreme Court
At precisely 8:15 a.m., I was seated in the first courtroom to the right upon entering the Supreme Court of Nigeria a familiar section reserved for journalists, litigants, and observers. The court staff was notably courteous and professional, guiding us to appropriate seating positions with warmth and efficiency.
I found my seat just behind Kabiru Tanimu Turaki SAN, who sat close to Seyi Makinde. Also present was Taofeek Arapaja, alongside a number of distinguished personalities, including Babangida Aliyu, Humphrey Abah, and Tony Azeighbeme.
Proceedings commenced promptly at 9:00 a.m. with a panel led by Mohammed Lawal Garba. The court first delivered its ruling in an appeal against the Nigerian Correctional Service, dismissing the matter for want of diligent prosecution a standard judicial outcome where a party fails to actively pursue its case.
Following this, the court rose briefly and announced a reconstitution of the panel to hear subsequent appeals. Upon resumption, the reconstituted panel comprising Justices Mohammed Lawal Garba, Chioma Egondu Nwosu-Iheme, Haruna Simon Tsammani, Stephen Jonah Adah, and Abubakar Sadiq Umar took their seats and commenced proceedings.
Learned Silk, Chris Uche, appearing for the appellants, moved a motion on notice seeking leave of the court to depart from the extant rules of the court. Specifically, he prayed for abridgment of time and an accelerated hearing of the appeal, citing the urgency imposed by the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) timetable, which fixes a deadline of the 28th for submission of candidates.
This application arose as a result of the judgment of Justice Omotosho of the Federal High Court, while the other suit is linked to proceedings before Justice Peter Lifu involving Sule Lamido. In that instance, the motion was moved by Paul Erokoro, also appearing for the appellants.
After hearing arguments from both counsels and responses from counsel to respondents, the court granted the respondents five days within which to file their briefs of argument in response, with an additional two days permitted for the appellants to file any reply briefs. In a firm and structured ruling, the presiding Justice directed that all processes be filed and exchanged by the 21st, with the hearing of the appeals scheduled for the 22nd.
What stood out most was the commanding yet engaging courtroom demeanor of Justice Mohammed Lawal Garba. He demonstrated firmness, decisiveness and clarity in managing proceedings, while also exhibiting a refreshing sense of humor. At one point, a light exchange with counsel elicited laughter across the courtroom. In another instance, he declined to acknowledge the appearance of a female counsel on the basis of improper court attire prompting her to briefly exit and return appropriately dressed, in compliance with courtroom decorum.
Proceedings concluded at exactly 11:00 a.m., marking a concise yet eventful sitting that reflected both the discipline and dynamism of Nigeria’s apex court.

Press Statement.
PDP LEADERSHIP: SUPREME COURT TO HEAR CASE ON APRIL 22.
The appeal against the Judgment of the Court of Appeal, which upheld the Judgment of Justice Omotosho, was mentioned for the first time today at the Supreme Court. Lead Counsel for the Kabiru Turaki-led Peoples Democratic Party, Chief Chris Uche, SAN, prayed the Court for a departure from the rules of the apex court by abridging time for the filing of processes. He further applied for the accelerated hearing of the case, due to the exigency of time, for its expeditious determination.
Counsel for the 1st to 3rd Respondents, E.C. Ukala, SAN, while not opposing the application, sought 15 days to file their Respondents’ Brief. Counsel for INEC, Kingsley Magbim, Esq., in like manner, did not oppose the application but sought 10 days to file their Respondents’ Brief. Other Respondents equally did not oppose the application.
The Court, having considered the facts deposed to in the affidavit in support of the appellant’s application, granted same and abridged time to 5 days for the Respondents to file their Respondents’ Brief, and 2 days for the Appellants’ Reply Brief (where necessary). All briefs are to be filed on or before the 21st of April, and the case has been fixed for definite hearing on the 22nd of April, 2026.
In a related case (Sule Lamido’s case), where the party filed an appeal against the Judgment of the Court of Appeal upholding the verdict of Justice Lifu, lead counsel for the Appellants, Paul Erokoro, SAN, similarly applied for an abridgment of time and a departure from the rules, seeking accelerated hearing.
Counsel for all the Respondents did not oppose the application. Consequently, the Court granted same, abridging the time for the filing of Respondents’ Brief to 5 days, and the Appellants’ Reply Brief (where necessary) to 2 days. The case was accordingly adjourned to the 22nd of April, 2026, for definite hearing.
We charge all true and uncompromised PDP members to continue to keep their faith alive and uphold the party in their prayers, in the hope that the apex court will give judgments that will save democracy and prevent the enthronement of a one-party state. This Supreme Court has remained the last hope of Nigeria and many Nigerians, even during military dictatorships, in the face of great pressure and unimaginable risk.

EASTER MESSAGE TO NIGERIANS
I felicitate with all Christians across Nigeria on the joyous occasion of this year’s Easter celebration.
Easter, which commemorates the resurrection of Jesus Christ, is a profound reminder of the enduring virtues of sacrifice, love, forgiveness, and hope. It is a season that calls on all of us regardless of faith or background to reflect on the power of unity, selflessness, and our shared humanity.
As we mark this sacred period, I urge Nigerians to embrace the true essence of Easter by promoting peace, tolerance, and mutual respect. Our nation’s strength lies in its diversity, and only through religious harmony and collective understanding can we build a more united, stable, and prosperous Nigeria.
At this critical juncture in our national life, we must rise above divisions and work together for the common good. I particularly call on all citizens to remain committed to democratic values as we look forward to the forthcoming national elections. It is my earnest prayer that these elections will be conducted in a peaceful, transparent, and credible manner, reflecting the true will and aspirations of the Nigerian people.
May this Easter season inspire renewed faith in our nation and usher in the kind of leadership that Nigerians genuinely desire leadership anchored on justice, equity, and service to the people.
Once again, I wish all Nigerians a peaceful and blessed Easter celebration.
Kabiru Tanimu Turaki
(SAN)

In this video, a legal luminary and Senior Advocate of Nigeria, Chief Femi Falana, gives a vivid description of what the judiciary, the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), @inecnigeria and the ruling party—the All Progressives Congress-led Federal Government—are doing to ensure a one-party state in the country by destabilizing opposition leaders and parties in Nigeria.
