*KFS Reaffirms Commitment to Restoration of the Cherangany Forest Ecosystem* The restoration and sustainable management of the Cherangany Forest Ecosystem remains critical in safeguarding Kenya’s water towers, enhancing climate resilience, conserving biodiversity and supporting livelihoods for communities that depend on forest resources. As one of Kenya’s key montane forest ecosystems, Cherangany plays an important role in water catchment protection, carbon sequestration and regulation of local climate systems. In line with these efforts, the Kenya Forest Service (KFS) today participated in the Inaugural Project Steering Committee (PSC) Meeting for the “Restoration and Sustainable Management of Cherangany Forest Ecosystems for Climate Change Resilience and Improved Livelihoods” project held at the Radisson Blu Hotel, Nairobi. The meeting brought together representatives from national and county governments, development partners and implementing agencies to review project progress, consider technical and budgetary adjustments, and approve the workplan and budget for the second disbursement phase. The Chief Conservator of Forests, Mr. Alex Lemarkoko, was represented by the Deputy Chief Conservator of Forests in-charge of Regional Forest Conservancy Coordination Mr. Martin Mamati, who reaffirmed KFS’ commitment to the restoration, protection and sustainable management of the Cherangany Forest Ecosystem. Funded by the Government of Italy through the Italian Agency for Development Cooperation (AICS), the project seeks to strengthen climate resilience, restore degraded forest landscapes and improve livelihoods for forest-adjacent communities in Elgeyo Marakwet and West Pokot counties. Through the initiative, KFS and partners target to restore approximately 1,700 hectares of degraded gazetted forests and an additional 300 hectares outside gazetted forests through tree growing, rehabilitation of degraded sites and sustainable land management practices. The project is expected to contribute significantly to Kenya’s national forest restoration agenda, climate change mitigation efforts and sustainable socio-economic development for communities living around the Cherangany ecosystem.

KFS, KenHa and CFA unite to restore Ngong Road Forest through tree growing initiative The Kenya Forest Service (KFS), in partnership with the Kenya National Highways Authority (KeNHA) and the Ngong Road Community Forest Association (CFA), today conducted a tree planting exercise at Ngong Road Forest as part of ongoing efforts to restore degraded forest landscapes and support the national target of growing 15 billion trees by 2032. Speaking on behalf of the Chief Conservator of Forests, Senior Deputy Chief Conservator of Forests Resource Mobilization and Partnership Madam Zipporah Toroitich commended the strong partnership among the institutions, noting that the collaboration began at the tree nursery stage and has grown into active ecosystem restoration initiatives. Representing the Chairperson of @KeNHAKenya Board, the Director of Roads at KeNHA reaffirmed the Authority’s commitment to environmental conservation and emphasized the importance of partnerships in achieving sustainable impact. Ngong Road CFA Vice Chairman Mr. Charles Kagire highlighted the need to restore the forest and called for greater stakeholder involvement in protecting urban forests from increasing development pressures. A total of 2,000 indigenous and assorted tree species were planted during the exercise, which also brought together the Wildlife Research and Training Institute in support of collaborative environmental conservation efforts. The initiative supports the Government’s national landscape and ecosystem restoration agenda under William Ruto aimed at increasing forest cover and restoring degraded ecosystems through the planting of 15 billion trees by 2032.

Kaptagat Integrated Conservation Programme Marks Decade of Restoration and Partnership Collaboration and strategic partnerships continue to play a pivotal role in advancing forest conservation, ecosystem restoration and climate resilience across the country. Through joint efforts between government institutions, development partners, the private sector and local communities, conservation programmes are increasingly delivering sustainable environmental and socio-economic impact. This commitment was reaffirmed during the launch of the 10th Edition of the Kaptagat Integrated Conservation Programme (KIP), held in Nairobi under the theme “10 to 20: Restore. Sustain. Transform.” The event, hosted by the Principal Secretary for the National Treasury and Economic Planning, Dr. Chris Kiptoo, CBS, who also serves as the Programme Patron, brought together senior government officials, conservation partners, development agencies, private sector stakeholders and community representatives to celebrate a decade of landscape restoration and outline the programme’s vision for the next ten years. The occasion was graced by the Principal Secretary for Interior and National Administration, Dr. Raymond Omollo, CBS, as the Chief Guest. The Chief Conservator of Forests, Mr. Alex Lemarkoko, was among key government officials who attended the launch and commended the programme for its contribution towards ecosystem restoration, forest protection and climate resilience within the Kaptagat landscape. “The Kaptagat Integrated Conservation Programme stands out as a model of what strategic partnerships can achieve in restoring critical ecosystems while uplifting livelihoods,” said Mr. Lemarkoko. The Chief Conservator further noted that the Kenya Forest Service has commenced fencing sections of Kaptagat Forest to enhance protection of the ecosystem from illegal activities and ensure the forest remains accessible only for lawful and sustainable use. “The fencing initiative is part of broader measures aimed at safeguarding this vital water tower and securing its future for generations to come,” he added. Speaking during the launch, Dr. Chris Kiptoo described the programme as a testament to the power of long-term partnerships and collective environmental responsibility. “For ten years, KIP has demonstrated that restoration is not only about trees, but about people, livelihoods and securing the future of our country. The next decade must focus on scaling impact, strengthening partnerships and sustaining the gains already made,” said Dr. Kiptoo. Chief Guest Dr. Raymond Omollo applauded stakeholders supporting conservation initiatives across the country, noting that environmental stewardship remains central to national development and climate action. “Protecting our forests and water towers is a national duty. Programmes such as KIP are helping to build resilient communities and secure ecological sustainability for future generations,” said Dr. Omollo. Since its inception, the Kaptagat Integrated Conservation Programme has played a significant role in forest restoration, biodiversity conservation, watershed protection and community empowerment within one of Kenya’s critical forest landscapes.

Kenya Forest Service today hosted the Ethics and Anti-Corruption Commission (@EACCKenya), led by the Chairperson Dr. David Oginde and the Chief Executive Officer Mr. Abdi Ahmed Mohamud, MBS, for a tree-growing exercise at Karura Forest in support of the National Tree Growing and Restoration Campaign. The exercise brought together officials from the Kenya School of TVET, Friends of Karura and students from Laiser Hill Academy in a shared effort to restore and protect Kenya’s forest resources. The activity was held on a section of land recently recovered through coordinated inter-agency collaboration aimed at safeguarding public forest land from illegal encroachment. Approximately 7.11 hectares of land was successfully reclaimed, with about 6.544 hectares reinstated to Karura Forest and approximately 0.566 hectares restored to the Kenya School of TVET. This recovery represents a significant milestone in strengthening the protection of public land and reinforcing accountability in environmental governance. The tree-growing exercise symbolized more than ecological restoration. It reflected renewed public trust, strengthened institutional collaboration and a shared national responsibility to conserve Kenya’s natural heritage for present and future generations. The initiative further aligns with the Government’s commitment to the 15 Billion Tree Growing Programme by 2032, which seeks to enhance forest cover, combat climate change and promote sustainable land management. Speaking during the event, Regional Forest Conservator Madam Joyce Nthuku, representing the @CCF_Kenya, Mr. Alex Lemarkoko, EBS, ‘ndc’ (K), commended the EACC and all stakeholders for their role in the successful recovery of encroached land within Karura Forest. She reaffirmed KFS’s commitment to protecting forest boundaries, restoring degraded ecosystems and ensuring the survival and growth of trees planted during the exercise. The participation of multiple stakeholders underscored the importance of collective action in environmental conservation. By restoring trees on reclaimed land, the institutions demonstrated that previously degraded and illegally acquired public spaces can be transformed into thriving ecosystems that support biodiversity, climate resilience and sustainable development. Every tree planted during the exercise stands as a living symbol of restoration, accountability and hope for a greener and more sustainable Kenya.
