Being sick with sick kids and solo parenting with no days left to take off work while trying to make final revisions to my dissertation is just par for the course at this point.

6yo “Its 1-4-4”😑

6yo “Is it time for trick or treating yet?” Me “see that clock? When it says 5-0-0 it will be close” 6 yo looks at clock for 2 seconds “it’s not changing” Me “you have to count to 60 and it will change by 1” 6 yo “ 1, 2, 3,…” This is going to be a very long afternoon.

6yo: what’s 4 more than 11? Me: hm… 6 yo: 11, 12, 13, 14, 15 Me: why do you ask? 6 yo: it’s that many days until Halloween Me: oh yes it is, but where did 11 & 4 come from? 6 yo: bc you said 11 days until 🎃patch & Halloween is 4 sleeps after that. #tmwyk

In waiting room with 6yo, we played guess the number. Me: I’m thinking of a number [1/2] 6yo: 5? Me: smaller 6yo: 0? Me: bigger 6yo: 2? Me: smaller 6yo: 1? Me: smaller 6yo: 1 and a half? Me: it’s smaller than 2 and smaller than 1. 6yo: 0 and a half? #tmwyk

Watching my 6yo process the first week of school through play with her 3 yo sister is fascinating. 3 yo now knows how to patiently wait in line among several other skills 6 yo felt was important for her to know.

@adeniji_x That is the sweetest thing! I know I’ll miss it immediately! Plus my oldest is starting kinder this year so my mama heart will be full of emotions this year for sure.

While I am very grateful for being able to work from home this last year, I am also very much looking forward to work and parenting being a little more separate. Maybe I can answer emails in one try and not 5+ tries?

We have written down my 5yo’s questions in a “Question of the day” journal. We then work to find out the answers together. Going back over her questions and drawings for answers of the last year is so fun. I have also learned a lot along the way.

When 3yo went through a book today, she paused while naming a character then said “Boy Princess played soccer!” Our discussions about gender are always expanding, but it’s so interesting to see how 3 &5yo girls talk about gender & don’t always default to male or a specific gender

@dankrutka I actually feel so much more informed because of some wonderful researchers/scientists dedicating their Instagram accounts to informing people about vaccines and covid and going over research papers. Like @HeatherBarahona I think it’s all so interesting now!

@dankrutka I lost 1 AirPod a few weeks ago. 3yo said maybe a fairy took it and I’m beginning to think that is what happened.

I played with these as a kid and I know I never thought explicitly about angles or how to apply mathematics to have a better understanding of my designs and design process.

The mathematical conversations my 5yo and I have had with this bead kid my husband brought home has been unexpected. Which shape would be optimal to build a star? Square, circle, hexagon? #tmwyk
