“Everything but instruction” is the water many schools swim in. It is an invisible disease that some managerial type principals don’t even recognize they have. Every lever and mechanism available to you should be directed towards improving teaching and learning. It’s the job.

@MrZachG Years ago, I had my math department chair walk classes with me. After the day, he said, "oh my, these are my colleagues and some I call friends, but yikes."

Teachers’ impressions of who is “good” among their colleagues often do not match my, or others’, observations. Some quiet, anti-social teachers are top-tier teachers, and yet they’re overlooked. My take: Without observing lessons, teachers must rely on superficial, social cues.

Due to a massive earthquake that occurred in the Pacific Ocean, a Tsunami Warning is in effect for those living in Hawaii. A Tsunami Watch is in effect for Alaska and the Pacific Coast of the United States. Japan is also in the way. Please visit tsunami.gov for the latest information. STAY STRONG AND STAY SAFE!

@sage_stage The important thing is whether students know and understand the learning objectives...not whether you wrote them down or on the board.

Year in review- Even though I did write objectives every day, then it just turned into a longer discussion on whether I used the right words, or how I could make them better. Would have been better off not writing them at all and doing the other things.
SageOnTheStage@sage_stage

Made it to my classroom with about 10 minutes to spare. Wanted to touch base with the new teacher across the hall, or maybe go over my lesson one more time. Instead, I erased yesterday's objectives off the board and rewrote some new ones that no one is going to read

Hot take: “Death by PowerPoint” is lazy criticism. It’s not about the tool, it’s about the delivery. I’ve seen 1-slide and 50+ slide lessons both be amazing.

@sage_stage You can control what they are doing in your classes during this time, right?

These end of the school year days actually get a little bit boring for me. Kids are mostly just working on their final projects or not. I'm mostly grading and giving feedback, but there's large stretches of time where I just have nothing to do. Going to start packing I guess

@MrZachG Engagement is students on-task, thinking, and sharing ideas.

The “compliance is not engagement” trope is so tired. It was the theory of everything back in the 2010’s and earlier. It’s not profound, and at its worst it encourages teachers to eschew strategies that insist that 100% of students attend, think, and share their ideas.

@sage_stage Is your class a grad requirement? If so, and she has failed then no. Unless your board policy allows students to walk if they only need to make up two classes in summer school...then she walks but doesn't get a diploma until she passes the class.

Got a senior who started off the year ok, but then stopped showing up. Haven't seen her more than a half dozen times since Christmas. Still turns in the daily assignments online, but doesn't take the tests, and those she has taken haven't been good. Think they will let her walk?

Pretty simple process...for example, I have 200 students enrolled in Chemistry for the next year and only have 180 books, then we are short and the librarian let's the District know the shortage...the shortage is padded slightly to accommodate students who enter the school new over the summer. Conversely, if I have only 180 chemistry students enrolled but 200 books then 20 relative new books sit on the shelf. The numbers fluctuate with enrollment from year to year.

I know it’s generally accepted by many that schools are underfunded, but I also know that nearly every school I’ve worked at has had brand new textbook sets just sitting in a cupboard somewhere barely ever used. Maybe a mismanagement of funds more than a lack of funds? Just a theory.
