Our country is falling apart at the seams. We are pandering to the few at the expense of our nation. We need to stop this madness!!

It’s interesting to see some people still panicking whenever a Canadian leader even mildly calls for reducing reliance on the U.S., as if we are supposed to walk on eggshells and try to avoid attention. Such submissive, fear-based thinking is the opposite of the internal strength and confidence necessary to build up our country.

Well, what he means to say is. Food suppliers across the Globe are starting to impose fuel surcharges on retailers because they don't want to reduce profits. This, is in direct response to the actions of billionaires and Donald Trump. Let's be accurate here.

I support Mark Carney's decision to accept people into the government I profoundly disagree with, even on key issues that mean a lot to me. Because I believe this is a pivotal time in Canadian history when we must do everything we can to dial down divisions, and focus on our common interests, and shared loyalty to Canada. We cannot succumb to toxic polarization like other countries have. The consequences of that are existential to democracy itself. Right now Canada's survival requires unity. We can fight the good fights another day. And who knows, just maybe if we make an effort to listen and to get to know those we vigorously disagree with, some hearts and minds may change along the way. We could end up with a bigger progressive consensus in the end.

@SpencerFernando Then eliminate parties. Until then every candidate is voted on by party first, candidate second, 99% of the time. Parties have platforms people support, so that candidate gets the votes. So you can never eliminate parties…

We need politicians with their own minds, not drones. Every party loves floor crossings when the floor crossing is in their direction, and hates floor crossings when it’s going the other way, so there is little point in considering the inevitable lamentations of the Conservatives, just as the celebration of the Liberals is of little intellectual value here. However, what must be stated is that whether you agree with individual floor crossing decisions or not, the ability of MPs to cross the floor must be protected. Our political system is built so that we elect individuals, not a party, and this is profoundly important because it ensures that those we elect have their own minds. The individual mind is the only real kind of mind there is. There is no ‘group mind’ or ‘collective mind.’

@Jibear @SpencerFernando In no way would that mute an MP’s voice. They would run, and could win under their new party. 100% democratic. Terrible take.

Were Canada to ban floor crossing, we would be suppressing the individual minds of those we elect, and further concentrating power in party leaders. As things stand now, floor crossing protects independence and keeps pressure on leaders to treat their colleagues well lest they watch those colleagues head elsewhere. Floor crossing – and the threat of it – protects us from a system where those we elect turn into mindless drones serving nothing more than the centralized will of ‘the leader.’ So, whether you agree with Gladu’s decision or not, it is essential to protect the right of MPs to cross the floor. The individual mind is the most precious resource we have.

@SpencerFernando Bingo. I have consistently supported the right to cross floor no matter which party is beneficiary and who it hurts. If people upset enough, can vote them out. Many forget one of the most famous floor crossers ever was none other than Winston Churchill.

So wait. Donald Trump threatened to wipe out a civilization if they didn't open up the Strait of Hormuz. At this moment the Strait of Hormuz won't be opened. Trump says ok 2 more weeks. It's all just market manipulation at this point.

@inthe250_ @marissenmark Follower 1000 here. Not to mention it really won’t save people much time on their trip. If they’re not less than 30 minutes from a stop. Driving is as quick as. Same thing with flying. It’s the hurry up and wait of passenger travel

@marissenmark They don’t ride for free. They pay $125, around 1.6% of the cost of the trip. Taxpayers pay the rest.

Seems like most people against high speed rail in Canada assume that everyone will ride it for free. And they also appear to assume that there will be no economic or environmental spinoff. We never hear them complain about building more highways or bridges.

Pierre got fired because he didn’t represent his riding. He doesn’t care about Canada or Canadians. Carleton knew that better than the rest of the country. He was their MP for 21 years. The guy that said MP’s should be limited to two terms is on his 8th term.

@CanadianCoffey Pierre is not just a regular MP, he is the Official Leader of the Opposition. That leader has the duty to represent Canadians to hold the government of the day accountable.

So, building high speed rail is "the west subsidizing" the east.... But, building a pipe line isn't the opposite? Also, this isn't remotely how taxation works. We don't pay "per person" for projects.
Paul Mitchell@PaulMitchell_AB

Ottawa wants to spend $90 Billion on high-speed rail between Toronto and Quebec City. That's $4000 out of the pocket of every Canadian taxpayer to fund something that 99% will never use. As usual, Western Canadians will be paying to subsidize Ontario and Quebec. Insanity.
