ICYMI: Samantha Harvey's stunning review of "Mapping the Darkness: The Visionary Scientists Who Unlocked the Mysteries of Sleep" in @nytimes: "A propulsive, utterly engrossing history.... None of it is simple and all of it is captivating." nytimes.com/2023/10/02/boo…

Hey all—I'm writing an article on red yeast rice supplements as an alternative to statins, and I'm looking for patient stories, good or bad. Have you tried these products? If you'd be willing to be interviewed, please DM me!

Book rec: "Tripping on Utopia," @ResObscura's new history of psychedelic science—how a Cold War alliance between idealistic anthropologists and CIA mind-control experts led to the '60s acid revolution. Mind-blowing! amazon.com/Tripping-Utopi…

Very cool study showing how sleep regulates not just muscle building (as per headline) but also metabolic health, fat production, bone strength, and other important stuff via growth hormone release. Nicely summarized here! newatlas.com/sleep/muscle-b…

Book rec! "Winter's End," by Lewis Cohen—essential reading on the end-of-life issues raised by a dementia diagnosis, focusing on one man's choice to exit on his own terms. Whatever you think of its ending, Dan Winter's life makes for a compelling tale.👍

Just finished "90 Seconds to Midnight," by Charlotte DeCroes Jacobs—inspiring new bio of Nobel Peace Prize winner Setsuko Thurlow, who survived the atomic bombing of Hiroshima as a girl and became one of the world's leading advocates for nuclear disarmament. Highly recommended!

Just read @PatchenBarss's bio of Roger Penrose—and wowza! Besides the science stuff (probing the nature of reality at the quantum level), what's riveting is the portrait of Penrose, whose mix of strengths and flaws is worthy of a Greek tragic hero. amazon.com/Impossible-Man…

People who live around writers must get really annoyed that we always say we finished the book we are working on when we really mean we finished one draft of it and will have to keep tinkering with it for at least another year. That being said: I finished.

Down over 60%. That’s how far federal research funding has fallen compared to this time last year. Every delay in funding is a delay in delivering for the health of American people.
