In the main, Labour votes were lent to Plaid Cymru to keep Reform out. The speed at which parts of the Welsh commentariat are mythologising last week’s result is becoming genuinely bizarre. This is a prime example. “Wales now has a progressive majority that is not dependent on Labour.” Except it quite literally is. Nothing passes in the Senedd without the support, abstention or acquiescence of the Senedd Labour Group. Unless Plaid Cymru intends to govern with Reform or the Conservatives. “Labour has always been queasy about Welshness and complacent about its dominance.” Labour delivered devolution, delivered further powers to Wales and oversaw enormous public investment in Welsh-language education, broadcasting and cultural promotion. You can argue Labour has lost support. Clearly it has.
