@Fawful81 I think it may be due to the expanse of the continental US and the way that hinders travel on whims. I think it's led to more identity with states rather than the nation. Also while N. American can apply to citizens of any of the 3 countries it seems to be a default for US folks

This is so interesting. As a German, I can say that I’m both German and European. It’s hard for me to grasp why citizens from the American continent can’t or won’t identify as Americans. Simply because US-Americans have claimed that name as their nationality?

@EbunoluwaFalade I always try to ask people to say names I'm not used to. Watching them say it helps a great deal in teaching one's own mouth the new structure needed to make unfamiliar sounds. And practice. I encourage anyone who says they can't to give it a go.

What is a gentle yet firm way to respond to someone senior to me saying “I cannot say that” after I pronounce my name to them? Today I tried: “it takes practice but it is doable!” I anticipate this may happen on rotations so might as well prep now 😬
