Looking like an illiterate moron who didn’t even know how to read, I barely completed it somehow, as badly as I could. It was a very embarrassing day, and I still can’t forget it. 4/4

I started fumbling in the first one or two lines and forgot everything. Then, out of nowhere, I took out the paper from my shirt pocket on which the poem was written so I could just read it. But I was so frozen at that moment that I wasn’t even able to read it from the paper 3/4

It reminded me of a similar experience I had, but it did not end on a good note. My class teacher signed me up for an inter-school competition, wrote the poem herself, and asked me to prepare it to recite in the competition. I had never participated in such a competition... 1/4
Ankur Warikoo@warikoo

Class 7th There used to be this poem recitation competition. My teacher felt I would be good at it. So she signed me up. What she didn’t know is that I was terrified of the stage. But at 13 years, I didn’t get to make these life decisions. So I prepare. And prepare. And prepare. And the day finally comes. My name is announced. I walk uo to the stage. Feet trembling. Hands shivering. Heart beat racing. Sweating. In front of me is a sea of teenage boys, waiting to pounce upon me on the first mistake I make. I start. And I talk. And I finish Pin drop silence. I wasn’t expecting any applause. But surprisingly there wasn’t a boo either. Frankly I don’t care. I was just too relieved it was over. I walk back and sit next to my friend. “What just happened, Ankur?”, he asks. “What happened?”, I replied. “You walked up to that stage. You started talking. Your lips were moving. But there was no sound coming out of your mouth.” THAT was my first experience speaking in front of the public. Today, I have given some 23 TEDx talks, get invited by the biggest colleges to speak to the students, get paid 10L/hr to speak at corporate events and have 16M+ followers on social media. And what I can tell you with conviction and personal experience - NOBODY IS BORN A PUBLIC SPEAKER. Everyone becomes one on stage. So how do you improve public speaking? Get on stage. Make that mistake. Face that fear. Fix those flaws. And get back again. And again. And again. Because in that moment Kalash, when your feet are trembling, hands are shivering, heart beat is racing and you are sweating - and you make a mistake - the world will laugh at you. But in that moment, my friend, there will be only one winner in the entire room. And that will be you. Everybody else is a loser. You are the one who went on stage! I am excited for you ❤️🔥
