How many times has someone told you that China didn’t industrialize until the 1980s when “capitalist” market reforms were introduced? We hear this talking point from rightoids and all manner of capitalism apologists (groomer apologists) all the time. But it couldn’t be further from the truth. While it is true that China’s economy grew exponentially in the 1980s, the foundation of that exponent was laid down under Mao long before the introduction of market reforms. The 1980s saw an explosion of construction and rapid rise of skyscrapers and consumer goods manufacturing But without the mass industrialization that took place before Deng, China never would have been poised to develop as it did. Under Mao the country sought about and succeed to develop “2 bombs, 1 satellite”: China built atomic bombs AND hydrogen bombs and put satellites into space before the market reforms… And consider the context… the entire world apart from Albania was united against China at this point. The nation had been battered and brutalized by the imperialists for over a century prior. They were isolated and under constant threat of invasion And they still succeeded in rapid industrialization to the point at which they could build working hydrogen bombs. If China didn’t industrialize until the 1980s, then explain to me how they had the factories and infrastructure to get H bombs, bro? A country where the average life expectancy had fallen to the thirties and where drugs were rampant went on to become a nuclear superpower. All before any market reforms were made. Without Mao, the successes of Deng would not have been able to materialize. Without an industrial and nuclear foundation, China would have just become another Indonesia or Bangladesh— a peripheral afterthought to the imperialists
