I’ve always wanted to do a Friday news dump, so here goes: Next week will be my last at Crain’s Cleveland. Leaving journalism is one of the most difficult decisions I’ve ever made, but the timing, and opportunity, felt right. I’ll miss my colleagues a ton.

@RunCrna I do know what it means, which is why I’m referring to his future cap hits being even worse. But thanks for your concern.

Fans: WHY DID YOU RE-SIGN DESHAUN WATSON? Browns: It was either that or a nine-figure dead cap hit.
Mary Kay Cabot@MaryKayCabot

The #Browns will convert a huge chunk of Deshaun Watson's $46 million base salary -- up to $44.745M -- into a restructure bonus to free up roughly $36M in cap space:

@KevinKleps Clase's trial is now likely to be postponed until the fall. So he'll be on the books all season.

According to Spotrac, the Guards' payroll is the second-lowest in MLB. Looking at Cot's Contracts' year-by-year payrolls, this would be the second time this century that Cleveland started the season with the 29th-ranked payroll. legacy.baseballprospectus.com/compensation/c…
Foul Territory@FoulTerritoryTV

"We can't [as a small market team] sign top-tier free agents. It's just impossible with the economic landscape in baseball." Guardians GM Mike Chernoff explains the importance of scouting and development to an organization like Cleveland, given its financial constraints.

I don’t think THE DIFF gets enough hate. Just an absolutely ridiculous waste of TV space.

@CleSportsFan34 I think they had to because they were in so deep and needed cap space. But it’s going to get really bad after this year, since his contract will finally be up. At that point, they’ll have to split what’s left between 2027 and 2028, I think.

@KevinKleps Why didn't they just bite the bullet and deal with it for less years instead of extending that out??

The Browns are down to “only” $46 million in cash owed to Watson. But because they’ve added three void years to free space, they still have $132.2 million cap dollars tied to the QB for 2026 ($80.7M) and beyond. Between Watson, Bitonio, Teller and Njoku, it’s pretty brutal.
Spotrac@spotrac

TE David Njoku announced that he plans to sign elsewhere this free agent season, leaving the #Browns with $24.3M of (void year) dead cap on his way out. Cleveland will treat him as a Post 6/1 release, taking on dead hits of: 2026: $9,534,000 2027: $14,797,000

@HowardPrimer I think they will be forced to be. My understanding is the void years all come due once the player is a free agent. You can then split that up by designating it a June 1 release — but I think you only get two of those.

Darius Garland being part salary dump, part traded for a 36-year-old ball stopper known for playoff disappointments is just … sad. Damn.

@KevinKleps It feels like Schwarber has been in his 30s for 10 years now. I can't believe he was only 23 in the '16 World Series.
