Watching the LFC game yesterday, without VAR, was a reminder how pre-VAR, officials had a massive tendency to over assert their presence in a game. Flag-happy linesmen, who used to thwart so many exciting counter attacks before VAR, were back on show yesterday. The ref was all ‘whistle first/think later’, scared to miss something. Our use of the VAR technology remains crude and massively in need of reviewing, but watching a game without it felt more frustrating overall. Key moment was the denial of Rio Ngumoha’s brilliant goal. The flag choked celebrations just as VAR does, but only this time the injustice was instant. Which Liverpool supporter wouldn’t have happily waited then for a delay and a VAR check ?
